“Light arising from the Land of the Morning” is the motto of Sacred Heart School – Ateneo de Cebu (SHS – AdC), formerly known as Sacred Heart School for Boys, Sacred Heart School of the Society of Jesus or Sacred Heart School – Jesuit.
The Sacred Heart School’s Board of Trustees unanimously agreed to change the school’s name to Sacred Heart School – Ateneo de Cebu on March 4, 2010.
SHS – AdC is a Catholic, private college preparatory school that is governed by the Philippine Province of the Society of Jesus. Its programs are offered in both Chinese and Filipino character.
The school was originally an all-males learning institution. However, its doors were opened to female students in 1998 but only up to a few levels in grade school. By 2006, the school produced its first female graduates.
The history of the school traces back in 1955 when the school was built along Gen. Maxilom Avenue, Cebu City and was established as an independent school. On February of 1965, the school turned into a Filipino School, which was approved by the Bureau of Education to teach the standard curriculum approved by the government with a Chinese Language and Arts program.
The school puts great emphasis on academic excellence, personal discipline, and moral upbringing of its students. It acts a mediator between the Filipino and Chinese-Filipino communities by incorporating Christian values and education.
Last 2007, SHS – AdC transferred to a much bigger facility in Canduman, Mandaue City, Cebu.
