On April 28, 2012, witness a one-of-a kind fashion show featuring the designs of James Cañete at The Veranda of J Centre Mall on A.S. Fortuna St., in Mandaue City, Cebu.
The theme of the event entitled “Aftershock: The James Cañete SS2012 Collection” is obscure desires and mud interaction. Models from Cebu’s finest modeling agencies, Lines, Stacy’s Exclusives Model Management and Vamp Models, will be strutting in creations inspired by Givenchy Spring Summer 2012 and Alexander McQueen Fall Winter 2012 collection. A total of eighteen (18) designs will be showcased in the runway.
Cañete adores Lee Alexander McQueen. The British fashion designer and couturier is one of the fashion industry’s finest and most notable names. He once worked as Hubert de Givenchy’s chief designer from 1996 to 2001, before he established his own label, the eponymous Alexander McQueen brand. His accomplishments include being officially considered “British Designer of the Year” four times, “International Designer of the Year” by the Council of Fashion Designers, and Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE).
Givenchy is the designer who founded the house of Givenchy in 1952. He is best known for his modern feminine styles. His famous patrons include Audrey Hepburn and the families of Guinness, Grimaldi and Kennedy. In 1995, Givenchy retired and was succeeded by John Galliano. In 2001, Julien Macdonald was named the Artistic Director for the brand’s women’s lines, which offers haute couture and ready-to-wear.
According to Cañete’s moodboard for the Aftershock Fashion Show, the Femme Haute Couture collection exemplifies the realms of the underworld, the nymphs and prehistoric creatures. The collection will feature silhouettes, corsets, sheer designs, fringes, cords, and water tubes, which are trademarks of James Cañete. A mood board is a type of poster design consisting of images, texts and samples of objects in a composition of the design concepts.
Here’s a sneak peek of one of the designs that you’ll be witnessing at the Aftershock Fashion Show. It is a Balete Tree-inspired creation, which makes use of cords and sheer cloth. It is accented with a hand-braided belt and a custom-made wrap.
The catwalk at The Veranda will open at 8 p.m., on April 28, 2012. The James Cañete Fashionworks will also feature creations by promising new talents in the local fashion industry, specifically Pinky Magalona, Orville Biongcog, Van Dale Dela Bajan, Josei Ouano, and Aia Tupas. The Aftershock models will be groomed by Jomer Arances, assisted by Cañete’s longtime hair and make-up assistant Rj Delmar and stylist Love Nuñez.
If you’re wondering why these names are familiar, Pinky Magalona actually bagged the top spot in the Cebu Young Designers Competition (CYDC) 2011 for the Apparel Division with her shredded chiffon creation. Her collection, which she captioned “Ecclectasia,” showcased her eclectic style and included “a little of everything.” Orville Biongcog and Van Dale Dela Bajan were also part of the CYDC 2011 finalists for the Apparel Division. Joselito “Josei” Ouano Cuizon has recently won LEE’s Student Designer Competition during the celebration of LEE National Denim Day and is also the editor-in-chief of BLANC. Aia Monika Tupas will be displaying her shoes collection on the runway for Cañete’s fashion show. Both Josei and Tupas are currently fashion design students at the University of San Carlos -Technological Center (USC-TC).
The April 28 event is free for all but the designer is requesting attendees to abide by his creations’ color code and come in either beige or black apparel.
Cañete is a graduate of Bachelor of Fine Arts, Major in Advertising Arts, from USC-TC. The young designer looks up to McQueen and Christian Lacroix, among other renowned fashion designers, and hopes to become just like them in the future.
In addition to being a fashion designer, Cañete is also freelance photographer, make-up artist, stage designer for production and events, events coordinator, graphic and layout artist, and graphic design consultant. He also works as the sales and marketing manager of Grafik 9 and acts as the marketing manager of the recently launched online fashion and art magazine, Blanc. As a photographer, he focuses on fashion photography and enjoys shooting avant-garde masterpieces and deviant concepts. His works as a make-up artist and designer have been featured in a number of local newspapers and magazines, including Sun.Star Cebu and Zee Lifestyle. He has played an active part in a number of runway shows prior to the upcoming Aftershock Fashion Show but this is his first solo endeavor.
