KAPOW! This month is for winning battles. What battles? Battles against obesity and diabetes! July is Nutrition Month with the focus on obesity and this week is Anti-Diabetes Week.
According to the latest National Nutrition Survey, obesity has been slowly increasing among the population. As of the 2013 survey, 5% of children younger than 5 years of age are overweight compared to 1% in 1989; 9.1% of children from 5-10 years old are overweight compared to 5.8% in 2003 while 13% of adolescents are either overweight or obese.
The World Health Organization warns that children who are overweight or obese tend to remain that way as they grow into adults. These health problems often complicate into diseases such as diabetes and hypertension. The International Diabetes Federation reports, “The Philippines is one of the world’s emerging diabetes hotspots. Ranked in the top 15 in the world for diabetes prevalence, Philippines is home to more than 4 million people diagnosed with the disease – and a worryingly large unknown number who are unaware they have diabetes.”
The best way to prevent these health issues is with proper diet and exercise. But what’s the use of eating healthy if the food we eat was sprayed with insecticide and growth-enhancing chemicals that can have adverse effects on us? But how can we make sure that what we’re eating is safe and who has the time for that? Luckily, the army for health and wellness continues to grow day by day! Let’s welcome our newest partner in fighting these modern-day problems.
