
The Philippines is set to make another mark in world history with the opening of the world’s first resort airport in Mactan, Cebu in 2018.
The groundbreaking ceremony for such a historic project was led by Pres. Benigno Aquino III last June 29, 2015, Monday. The concept was proposed by GMR-Megawide Cebu Airport Corporation (GMCAC). The new airport is expected to boost Cebu as a tourism and business destination and be able to cater to 12.5 million passengers a year, more than double the current capacity of 4.5 million.
The project has already caught foreign attention. Daily Mail UK has published an article about the first-ever resort airport with their promotional video. This new airport aims to be “not just a gateway, it’s a destination.”
Mactan-Cebu International Airport, which has been seeing some improvements since the change in management. As part of their contract with the government, GMCAC has also taken over the operations of the airport and has since been implementing changes such as brighter lighting, improved security check, self check-in kiosks and redesigning the interior layout of the building to create more space, from moving offices to changing seating arrangements.
