It was an activity among students who gathered, celebrated and entertained themselves through cooking (literally) and discussing other related issues concerning the university. Because of its history and impact, the Cookout came to existence and eventually became a yearly celebration. Every year, it raises, addresses and advocates for a specific social issue to be conceptualized in a form of entertainment.

With its active student involvement, the Cookout organizers came up with four segments that showcase the talents of students in dancing (SAYAWAN), singing (KANTAHAN and BANDAHAN), and creative modeling (RAMPAHAN). They went on further to invite Cebu-based bands and performers to perform on stage.

This year, the University of the Philippines Cebu Student Council (UPCSC) together with Spectrum Productions brings once again the grandest and most awaited event among college students and music enthusiasts in Cebu – the UP Cookout 2012.

UP Cookout 2012, which celebrates its 25th anniversary, carries the theme “Iskonek. Reboot the system. Start up!” Iskonek relates to the different relevant issues about Internet usage such as the correct use of the social networking sites as a platform for social activism.

“The unprecedented power of the internet medium should be utilized properly in raising social consciousness among Filipinos. Filipinos should transcend merely on tweeting or posting status updates about what you do and where you go when using social media. Rather, it should be a platform for social fora and activism,” said King Anthony Perez, Vice-Chairperson of the Student Council.

Despite the problems faced by the production team last year, this year’s celebration will surely be one of the highlighted Cookouts that UP Cebu has ever celebrated because of the tireless efforts given by the students.

“The Cookout has always been grounded on why we hold it in the first place and that is to voice out our call for change about a certain issue. Since last year, Spectrum Productions have always been faithful to this call and we are honored to celebrate its silver anniversary and continue the legacy that the first Cookout started 25 years ago. Last year, heavy rains somehow intervened with the production. But this year, I guarantee UPians and Cebuanos that the rain won’t stop us. Cookout 2012 will be worth the wait,” said Charisse Gay Ursal, Over-All Director of Cookout 2012.

UP Cebu-based student organizations will also take part in the four traditional Cookout competitions in singing, dancing and modeling. This will show how creative the students are in depicting their respective ideas in the issues concerning the usage of Internet.
