Sonshine Radio Cebu Half Marathon
The first Cebu Sonshine Run was held on July 3, 2011. This event is organized by DYAR Sonshine Radio 765 in Cebu, which will once again hold a half marathon on Sunday, July 22, 2012, with its start/finish area on the grounds of The Terraces, Ayala Center Cebu.
A marathon is a footrace run on an open course and is usually 26 miles and 385 yards or 42.2 kilometers; thus, the half marathon will be a total distance of 21.01 kilometers via global positioning system.
Assembly time for the half marathon is at 3:30 a.m. The race starts at 4:30 a.m. for the 21K and is scheduled to last until around 9:30 a.m. You may view the marathon’s FB event page at http://www.facebook.com/events/287458081310900/
The race director for the half marathon is Joel Baring, who happens to be a race organizer for Sports and Fitness Enthusiasts (SAFE). The official racecourse was surveyed and measured by SAFE with help from the LiveStrong organization.
Registration started on June 4 and remains ongoing. The event’s registration sites are the following:
- Runnr, Active Zone, Ayala Center Cebu

The lower categories are open to all, with prizes and medals for the first three runners in the 3K and 6K and for the first five runners in the 12K (men and women). The 21K will have prizes and medals for the first ten finishers (men and women), with medals to all the finishers. Cash prizes, certificates and some surprises also await the runners in the half marathon.
Registration fee breakdown for the four categories of the run is as follows:
Category with singlet without singlet
21K Php600 Php450
12K Php350 Php200
6K and 3K Php300 Php200
Though the half marathon categories are open to all, participants below eighteen years old must have their entry form signed by their parent/guardian. Foreign or professional runners may join to show their support for the Operation Sonshine project but are disqualified from the cash prize.
A number of companies serve as the co-presentors for Sonshine Radio’s second annual run, like Pocari Sweat, Andy Hotel, with major sponsors like Capriole, Timex, Metro Grafix, Suarez & Sons, and St. James premium drinking water. Minor sponsors include Jollibee, Mitos Magsaysay, Magnolia Fresh Chicken, Monterey Meats, San Miguel Foods, Body and Sole, Francis “Chiz” Escudero, and Everything Cebu.
Sonshine Radio’s Half Marathon is an event in support for its project Operation Sonshine, which carries out medical missions, feeding programs and assistance for areas struck by natural disasters, specifically Iligan and Cagayan de Oro, which were hit by Typhoon Sendong in 2011, and Guihulngan, Negros Oriental, which was hit by the 2012 earthquake.
Last year’s Cebu Sonshine Run (3K / 6K / 12K) had photographic coverage by 1up2downphoto.com of the estimated 2,000 individuals who participated, from different running clubs, private companies, government agencies, Central Visayas KLCs, Keepers’ Club International, and many families. Cebu City Mayor Michael “Mike” Rama, with his two children, also participated in the run.
DYAR 765 kHz Sonshine Radio Cebu is one of the most technically advanced AM radio stations in town. It has an impressive ten thousand watts, making it one of the strongest and the fastest-growing stations in the broadcast industry. It reaches the whole of Cebu City, Mandaue City and Lapu-lapu City, and the entirety of Cebu province. Furthermore, it reaches Bohol, Leyte and even as far as Negros Oriental, Negros Occidental and some parts of Northern and Western Mindanao.
