Here in our county, the national thanksgiving celebration for the canonization of Pedro Calungsod will be held on November 30, 2012. The groundbreaking ceremony of the templete (place for mass) in the South Road Properties (SRP) for this celebration was on August 7, 2012. According to Fr. Raul Gallego, chairman of the committee on venue, the templete, which will accommodate all the visiting bishops, is anticipated to be complete by mid-November. Organizers of the thanksgiving mass expect over half a million people to attend the event honoring the second Filipino saint.

CBCP assistant secretary-general Fr. Marvin Mejia announced that by October 25, the official image of San Pedro Calungsod will be brought back to Manila to begin visiting some dioceses in our country before the national thanksgiving celebration at SRP. The visits around the country, called Duaw Nasud, start with a motorcade from the airport to the Manila Metropolitan Cathedral. For the first night, the image will be at the University of Santo Tomas. It will then visit dioceses in the National Capital Region before heading to the Northern Luzon and Bicol region dioceses.

On October 31, 2012, the image goes to Villamor Air Base, where the Military Ordinariate is located, before it’s transported to Vigan on November 2. From Vigan, it will go to Legazpi before traveling to the Visayas and Mindanao, where the image will stay from November 13 to November 27.

The image returns to Cebu on November 27, in time for the Triduum Masses leading to the national thanksgiving on November 30. Duaw Nasud is a partnership effort between the National Commission and the Cebu Commission for the National Visitation of the official image of Pedro Calungsod as a saint. The National Commission is in charge of the Luzon visitation while the Cebu Commission takes charge of the Visayas and Mindanao visits.

Those who know people in Ginatilan may be interested in the fiesta that the town is preparing for Pedro Calungsod’s canonization. The town in southwestern Cebu is thought to be his hometown, with a Calungsod clan who, for the most part, live in barangay Cagsing. The town invites all Calungsods to the celebration, which is scheduled to start on October 18, 2012, also. Most of the celebration activities will be held in the St. Gregory the Great parish area.
