The organizers of the most prestigious pageant for alternatives in the country will be holding a screening for qualified candidates on July 29, 2012, at the Elizabeth Mall Activity Center. The screening will start at exactly 1 p.m. and end at 5 p.m. Aspirants must be Filipino or of Filipino descent, and between 18 and 38 years old. They should come in their most attractive little black dress (LBD) or casual black dress, and bring with them a black one-piece swimsuit.

The requirements for the screening are:

  • Photocopy of a valid ID
  • Head shot and full body photos
  • Fully accomplished application form

All requirements are to be submitted inside a long brown envelope. The application form can be downloaded from https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B8T_RvvA8mRPNUg1ekJsWHFHVTg.  To save time, applicants are reminded to bring all the requirements or they won’t be entertained. They are also expected to arrive already wearing their LBD and be fully made up. Changing their clothes or doing their makeup in the venue is not permitted. Applicants may bring their supporters but they are not allowed in the backstage so it will not be too crowded.

The aspirants who will grab the attention and impress the Queen of Cebu 2012 screening committee get a chance to be crowned the next Queen on November 9, 2012, at the Grand Ballroom of Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino. The coronation night will be held in the said hotel four consecutive times.

Queen of Cebu not only showcases the beauty and talents of alternatives, but it also aims to instill the values of kindness and compassion. Part of the duties of the crowned Queen includes philanthropic works to the pageant’s chosen beneficiaries. Candidates are asked to create a realistic plan of action for a chosen cause. It is one of considerations in the pre-judging of Queen as it will show the importance of being beautiful inside and out. This year’s beneficiaries are yet to be announced.

The chairman for Queen of Cebu 2012 is designer Cary Santiago. He has been very active with Queen since its inception in 2009. It is co-chaired by interior designer/socialite Tessa Prieto-Valdez. Because she was so impressed with the coronation night production of Queen of Cebu 2011, Valdez pledged to support this year’s beneficiaries. Philanthropist Bea Zobel de Ayala has also pledged her support. This year’s pageant is more special as it has been registered to the Securities and Exchange Commission. It is now the only legal beauty pageant for alternatives in Cebu.

The reigning Queen is Bee Urgello, who represented Spain in the pageant, instantly captured the hearts of the judges and audience with this introduction: “I come from the land of the conquistadores, the country that conquered the Philippines for 300 years. Tonight, I’m going to conquer your hearts with my charm and captivating beauty. Viva España!”

The 2011 Queen further impressed everyone and outshone 19 other beautiful candidates, after coolly and intelligently answering TV host Boy Abunda’s question about the readiness of our country for a gay president. Her response was “Although I agree that our country is ready, I don’t think sexual orientation should be a qualification. As long as one has the skills and the heart to lead a nation, then he or she can be the next president of this country.”

Urgello, who is a registered nurse, comes from a wealthy Cebuano family. She is known as an independent and down-to-earth person. Aside from gracing different pageants and social events with her lovely presence, she kept herself busy by doing benevolent works and mentoring aspiring beauty queens. Now that her reign as Queen is almost over, do not expect her to join other pageants anytime soon. Urgello has made it clear in the past that this will be the first and last pageant she would ever participate in.

Completing the Queen of Cebu 2011 lineup and joining Bee Urgello, who was crowned Queen Universe, are Queen World Christmond Biaño and Queen International Earla DelaVeyga. Honey Lee and Megan Young are the Queen of Cebu 2011 1st runner-up and 2nd runner-up, respectively. They were carefully chosen by Miss Universe 1999 1st runner-up Miriam Quiambao, actor-model Victor Basa, actress Angel Aquino, model-blogger Divine Lee of Global Asiatique, Dedon Furniture’s Herve Lampert, hairstylist Moussa Abdayem, Waterfront General Manager Alfred Porten Schlager, Cebu coordinator of the ICanServe Foundation Mary Ann Alcordo-Solomon, and bachelor Eduardo Ngo II.

Everything Cebu wishes all the aspirants the best of luck. For more information regarding the pageant, visit their Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Queen-of-Cebu/105242071610.
