Otaku Fest 2012
Remember how you used to run home after class just so you could catch up with the local airing of Dragon Ball Z? Well, kids from the late ‘80s and the ‘90s would sure be nostalgic this February 4, 2012, as the University of the Philippines Cebu hosts the fifth installment of the well-attended Otakufest.
UP Otakufest V takes on “Old School” as its main theme with a sub-theme of “gakuensai.” The Gakuensai is a Japanese school festival, which is a principal event in every Japanese school year. Otaku is a Japanese term used to describe hardcore fans of science fiction, computer games, anime, and manga. Cosplay, which is an abbreviated term for costume play, requires participants to don costumes and accessories representing a specific character or idea. Characters are usually based on popular Japanese fiction, and recently American cartoons and science fiction.
According to the organizers, to eliminate confusion regarding the theme, they have arbitrarily determined that the time delimitation of classic anime is anytime on or before the year 2000.
There are three competitions set for participants, specifically solo cosplay, group cosplay and quizbattle royale. Pre-registration for the competitions ended last January 28, 2012.
The Quizbattle Royale is a mini quiz show that covers any published work (i.e. books, movies, tv shows, anime, toys, games, etc.) released on or before the year 2000. It is a group competition, with each group consisting of three (3) members. The elimination round will have three difficulty levels, specifically Normal, Nightmare, and Hell. The group with the highest score for the elimination round will proceed to the next round, Sudden Death. During Sudden Death, all three group members will compete against each other until one emerges victorious.
Participants in the Solo Cosplay Competition must portray a character from any published work released on or before the year 2000. Characters from ongoing published materials are allowed as long as they were first released within the “classic” timeline.
The Group Cosplay Competition follows similar rules and regulations as stated in the Solo Cosplay Competition. Each competing group should have a maximum of ten (10) members and a minimum of two (2) members. Members of one group cannot participate in another group. Each group must also prepare a presentation that should not exceed five (5) minutes as each minute in excess will constitute a deduction of five (5) points.
For both cosplay competitions, original characters are automatically disqualified and the use of hazardous materials is strictly prohibited. The cosplayers for both competitions will be judged based on these criteria:
- 40% Attire (Accuracy, Craftsmanship, Creativity)
- 30% Stage Performance (Stage Presence, Projection)
- 20% In-Character (On and Off Stage)
- 10% Audience Impact
For those who will be joining the various competitions, registration fees will be collected at the entrance or the registration booth on the day of the event. Confirmation of registration will only be until 12 noon and failure to comply will result to forfeiture of slots. Booth owners and concessionaires are also requested to come as early as an hour before the event so that the staff can assist in setting up your booth in your assigned location.
The faculty and students currently enrolled at UP Cebu are granted free entrance. Just present your UPCC ID or Form 5 upon entry. Registration is required. For outsiders who are not competing, advanced tickets are sold at Php50 until February 1, 2012. On-site registration fee is at Php60 each. Those who have registered for the competitions are no longer required to pay the entrance fee.
Otakufest V t-shirts were sold on a pre-order basis, which ended last January 27. The staff will also be selling shirts on-site at Php190 each, with limited stocks for every size.
All transactions should be made with authorized Otakufest V Secretariat/Finance Staff only. You can identify staff members easily with their shirts and nametags.
The event will take place at UP Cebu College, which is located along Gorordo Avenue. For those with private vehicles, ample parking space is available at the Arts and Sciences Building, which is located across the venue. Only UP faculty and staff, as well as booth owners and concessionaires, are allowed to park at the event grounds on the day itself.
The organizers suggest that those who are commuting through public utility vehicles to ride jeepneys with 04 and 17 designations, as they ply the Lahug area and are sure to pass by the UP Cebu campus. You are encouraged to choose the following routes: 04L (Lahug-SM-Ayala), 04C (Lahug-Ramos-Carbon), 04M (Lahug-Ayala), 17B (IT Park/Lahug-Carbon-IT Park-Capitol-Jones-Colon), and 17C (IT Park/Lahug-Carbon-IT Park-Gorordo-Mango-Ramos-Sanciangko).
