The fifth installment of the One Cebu Expo is considered the most successful as the number of exhibitors nearly tripled since its inception. More than 450 big and small businesses in Cebu displayed their products and services including delicacies, furniture and home accessories, toys, clothing, jewelry, local tourism attractions, and a lot more.

When Governor Gwen Garcia initiated the expo in 2008, they only had 133 exhibitors. Convincing establishments to participate was difficult back then. However, the number of participants has steadily increased over the years. In 2010, there were 333 exhibitors, while last year, there were 365.

The One Cebu Expo 2012 also featured more than 100 Cebu-made products under the One Town, One Product (OTOP) Program of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Cebu. More than half of these products are supported by the local government units (LGUs) in Cebu.

Among the mouth-watering delicacies and impressive innovations of LGUs that joined were Bogo’s special pintos, a sweet delicacy made from ground corn; Borbon’s takyong or edible bush snails in corn oil; Sogod’s tablea or cacao extract; Carmen’s cultured crabs; Liloan’s rosquillos; Bantayan Island’s dried seafood; Consolacion’s  bamboo hats, Tabogon’s charcoal briquette; Alegria’s furniture; and Dalaguete’s pickled vegetables.

For the first time, One Cebu Expo 2012 featured the Bisaya Film Festival, showing a collection of short films about Cebuano culture and heritage. The Bisaya short films were shown for free on August 12, from 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. With a total screening time of 2 hours and 34 minutes, the short films were Liwat sa Laway (2 minutes), Ampo (4 minutes), Yawyaw (5 minutes), Peace Valley (17 minutes), Undo (19 minutes), Ang Katapusang Bagting (29 minutes), Doktora (29 minutes), Saranghae My Tutor (29 minutes), Uwan Init Pista sa Langit (30 minutes), Ngilngig Stories (34 minutes), and Ang Gugma ni Olivia (36 minutes).

Another first is the participation of the Portrait Artists Society of the Philippines, Inc. (PASPI). Composed of 50 members, the group opened an exhibit last August 7 that emphasizes on “artistic integrity as the essential process of excellent portrait painting.” The display, which aimed to strengthen relationships between business and the arts, was entitled “Figures and Landscapes.”

The attention-grabbing pieces in the exhibit included Billy Pormida’s watercolor paintings of Cebu Cityscape and Puso (hanging rice); Ramon de Dios’ Tranquil Ga-as (Balamban) and Tranquil Tonggo, Mactan in oil; Chris Java’s Fort San Pedro in resin; Marlowe Villagonzalo’s Mountain View Park and Family Park in oil; and Henrietta Hermoso’s “Window from the Past” on mixed media.

Here is the list of participating artists in alphabetical order: Gabby Abellana, Darby Alcoseba, Artemio Anga Jr., Dondon Bayawa, Karby Beloy, Crispin Bovier, Boy Briones, Boboy Cañete, Felix Catarata, Drego Cavalida, Harry Co, Ramon de Dios, Adeste Deguilmo, Benz Flores, Pronnie de la Cerna, Efren Enolva, Audie Estrellada, Carly Florido, Bong Francisco, Luther Galicano, Romulo Galicano, Bobby Gonzales, Benji Goyha, Ber Hermoso, Jun Impas, Cris Java, Boy Kiamko, Henrietta Hermoso, Luis King, Elroy Managbanag, Rudy Mañero, Eli Manongas, Melver Mercado, Malvin Lim, Maxcel Migallos, Jess Najarro, Clint Normandia, Gigi Ocampo, Cocoy Paano, Jose Mari Picornell, Billy Pormida, Jess Rona, Ruel Rosello, Dong Tallo, Lito Torremucha, Antonio Vidal, Pepe Villadolid, Jobril Villaver, Marlowe Villagonzalo, Kimsoy Yap, Pempe Ybañez, Marlon Ylanan, and Sonia Yrastorza.

One of the products showcased in the expo is the Organicare aromatherapy massage oil that contains essential oils such as chamomile, lavender and virgin coconut oil. It also contains natural soothing ingredients including eucalyptus, peppermint, orange, capsicum, and ginger. Compared to synthetic massage oils, this natural massage oil does not contain harmful chemicals. In fact, aside from providing a relaxing and pain-relieving effect, it claims to moisturize the skin and protect it from bacteria and germs. Another interesting brand in the expo is Jacka Skateboards that sells a full range of skateboard styles made from pure bamboo. RFR Gifts and Crafts, which is a manufacturer and exporter of quality handicrafts, also displayed fashion accessories and other gift items. Mr. Jun Cabillar manned his stall for Baktas Shoes and Accessories, which is also an exporter of souvenir items and collectibles.

Other notable exhibitors during the One Cebu Expo 2012 include Kenneth Cobonpue, Amore Bridals by Dexter Alazas, Binibini by Janice Minor, Top Dre Creations and Designs Co., and the Mandaue Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI). Designer Vania Romoff also showcased her impressive clothing with the use of polyhemp fabric from Anthill Fabric Gallery.

The 10-day expo, which opened in August 3 and ended with a midnight sale on August 13, is one of the highlights of the 443rd anniversary of the Cebu province that also included the elegant Governor’s Ball on August 10 and the colorful Pasigarbo sa Sugbo on August 11.
