Marathons in Cebu – August

Runners all over Cebu will be busy with the number of activities scheduled for the month of August. Topping the list is the much anticipated Cobra Ironman 70.3 Philippines 2012, which event occurs on August 5, 2012.

The province of Cebu will host the fourth staging of the Cobra Energy Drink Ironman 70.3 Philippines and the Alaska Milk Ironkids Triathlon, which is slated to happen on the first weekend of August. This year’s race is envisioned to be Ironman’s “biggest, most exciting edition yet,” according to Sunrise Events, Inc.

The 1.2-mile swim event will begin at the coastline of Philippines’ premier five-star resort, Shangri-la’s Mactan Resort and Spa, in Mactan, Cebu. This is the first in four years that participants of the Ironman triathlon will be swimming in open water, instead of a man-made lake.

The 56-mile bike ride will traverse four municipalities of the Cebu province, specifically Lapu-lapu, Mandaue, Talisay, and Cebu City.

The event will culminate with a 13.1-mile run, which will take place at Punta Engaño, in Lapu-lapu.

According to a press release on the Ironman 70.3 Philippines Official Web site, the number of participants include “1,319 individuals and 115 relay teams from 31 countries, with 350 on the wait list.”

The Alaska Milk Ironkids Triathlon is the local version of the internationally acclaimed Ironman triathlon series, which is open to children aged 6 to 14 years old.

Among the male professional triathletes to look out for during the Cobra Ironman 70.3 event are Pete Jacobs (Australia), who won the Ironman 2010 and 2011 editions; Terenzo Bozzone (New Zealand), who is considered the Ironman Philippines’ inaugural champion for winning the 2009 race; Fredrik Croneborg (Sweden); Justin Granger (Australia); Mathieu O’Halloran (Alaska Team TBB Philippines); and Jesse Thomas (United States).

The list of female professional triathletes joining the August 5 race include Belinda Granger (Australia), who is the Ironman defending champion, Bree Wee (United States), who placed third in the 2011 edition, and Ali Fitch (Alaska Team TBB Philippines).

Registration for the said event was from December 1, 2011 up to May 31, 2012. Individuals had to pay a fee of US$225/US$275, while teams had to shell out US$325/US$375. For more information regarding the race, visit their Web site: http://www.ironman703phil.com/cebu/

CDU University Run 7th Edition

Another one of Cebu’s longest and biggest marathons will happen on August 19.  The Cebu Doctors’ University’s 7th University Run, which is co-presented by the Larrazabal Eye Group and Run for Sight Foundation, is dubbed as the “3 Bridge Challenge.”

The 25k race officially starts at the CDU campus, which is located at the North Reclamation Area in Mandaue City, and follows a 3-bridge route. Specifically, the runners will pass through the old Mactan Bridge, the Marcelo Fernan Bridge and the new Cansaga Bay Bridge. According to a Cebu Daily News article published last July 12, approximately 250 long distance runners have already enlisted for the challenge.

If you are not up for the 25k challenge, you may still join the races for shorter distances (13K, 6K and 3K). Gun start for the 25K will be at 4:30 a.m., followed by the 13K at 4:45 a.m., the 6K at 5:15 a.m., and the 3K at 5:30 a.m. The top finishers in the 25K and 13K categories will receive a Sun life personal accident insurance worth Php25,000 in addition to cash prizes and medals.

Registration is ongoing at the new Run For Sight office at the Cebu Doctors’ University Hospital.

Timex Run 2012

Also set for August 19, 2012, is the Timex Run 2012. The participants can opt to join any of three race distances, in particular the 5K, 10K and 16K. Assembly is at Osmeña Blvd., in front of the Cebu Normal University. Assembly Time for 5K runners is at 5 a.m., 10K at 4:30 a.m., and 16K at 4 a.m.

The registration period is from July 2 to August 12, 2012, at the Cebu City Sports Complex, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., and at the Timex booth at Ayala Center Cebu’s Active Zone, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The registration fees for the 5K, 10K and 16K categories are Php400, Php500 and Php600, respectively.

Y101 Armscor Run 2012

On August 26, 2012, the Y101 Armscor Run 2012 will take place. This year, it promises to be an even bigger event with more prizes.

This year’s race distances are 5K, 10K and 21K.  Participants for the 5K and 10K have to pay a registration fee of Php350, while 21K runners have to shell out Php500. Singlets will be provided only to the first 500 regular-priced registrants.

Run For 100% Smoke-Free Environment 2

Also scheduled for August 26, is the Run For 100% Smoke-Free Environment 2 as organized by the Talisay City Runners’ Club.

Assembly will be at 4 a.m., at the Talisay City Hall, in Talisay City, Cebu.

The run offers three race distances, particularly the 5K, 10K and 21K. Registration fee for the 5K is Php250, Php300 for 10K, and Php350 for the 21K. Interested participants may register at the Talisay District Hospital, the Talisay Sports Commission or at RUNNR in Ayala Center Cebu.
