Lofranco Wins Sinulog Idol 2012
Ronna Jenn Lofranco outshone eleven (11) other contestants as she bagged the title Sinulog Idol 2012 Grand Champion in the contest finale held yesterday, January 12, 2012.
The third year AB Mass Communication student at the University of San Jose Recoletos wowed the judges and owned the stage with her impressive rendition of “Go the Distance.” Lofranco’s song choice is from the official soundtrack of the film “Hercules.” The animated feature was released by Disney in 1997. Roger Bart performed the song in the film, while Michael Bolton performed it in the end credits. Ricky Martin performed the song in the Spanish version of the film. Our very own Regine Velasquez, dubbed as Asia’s Songbird, has a revival of the song.
The 19-year-old Lofranco brought home a trophy along with a cash prize that amounted to Php15,000.
Danielle May Ozaraga bagged second prize (Sinulog Idol 2012 First Runner-Up) and Mark Vincent Sevilla finished third place (Sinulog Idol 2012 Second Runner-Up). Ozaraga is a 14-year-old high school student at Rosemost Hills Montessori College. Sevilla is 19 years old and a first year BS Information Technology student at the Cebu Technological University. Ozaraga, who is from Looc, Danao City, received Php10,000, while Sevilla, who hails from Talisay City, received Php7,500 in cash prizes.
Lofranco, Ozaraga and Sevilla were able to survive an intensive elimination phase that lasted six (6) days. Six of the original twelve (12) contestants made it to yesterday’s grand finals. Each of the six finalists performed songs that were special to them for the first round of the night’s competition. Three were eliminated leaving Lofranco, Ozaraga and Sevilla to compete for the distinction of being the grand champion of the Sinulog Idol 2012. The three remaining contestants were asked to perform songs that they considered to have inspired them. This category was dubbed as “Time of My Life.”
The 16-year-old Jem Keziah Keren Felicilda, who was one of the six grand finalists, won the Sinulog Idol 2012 Texter’s Choice award. Felicilda garnered 4,560 text votes earning her the special award sponsored by Globe Telecom.
The vocal coach and branch manager of the Center for Pop-Cebu Jay Unchuan, Pinoy Dream Academy scholar Apple Abarquez, and Cebu journalist Mark Ryan Borinaga judged the performances during the two-hour finale held at Fuente Osmena Circle. The venue was alive and jam-packed with supporters despite the intermittent rains that delayed the commencement of the program. The audience was made up of supporters from the different parts of Cebu and Leyte who braved the inclement weather to cheer for their bets.
The recently concluded Sinulog Idol competition is a collaboration of the Cebu City Government, Sinulog Foundation Inc., Center for Pop Music Philippines, and Soundtraxx Productions Studio.
