David Cook is an American rock singer-songwriter, who rose to stardom after bagging the American Idol Season 7 title on May 21, 2008. He received 56 percent of the votes, getting more than 12 million votes than Archuleta.

A week after his victory, Cook broke a lot of Billboard chart records. Eleven of his songs debuted on the Hot 100 in one week, breaking Miley Cyrus’ six-song debut record in 2006. “The Time of My Life” debuted at number three on the chart. That same week, Cook placed 14 debut entries at the Billboard’s Hot Digital Songs chart, breaking Bon Jovi’s record of six in 2007. His 17 song entries on the chart had a total of 944,000 digital downloads during the first week of selling.

Cook released his self-titled major label album, which was produced by Rob Cavallo, in 2008. In making this album, he collaborated with several artists such as Jason Wade of Lifehouse, Ed Roland of Collective Soul, Zac Maloy of The Nixons, Raine Maida of Our Lady Peace, Neal Tiemann of Midwest Kings, Kevin Griffin of Better Than Ezra, and a lot more. The first single entitled “Light On” reached number 17 on the Billboard Hot100 and was certified platinum. His single’s success was followed by the dual release of “Come Back to Me” and “Bar-ba-sol.” In 2009, his first album was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association for America (RIAA).

Cook embarked on his first headline national tour entitled Declaration Tour, which began on February 13, 2009, and was originally set to end on April 25, 2009. Because of the success of the tour, it was extended twice. He had a total of 153 shows.

In 2011, Cook released his second album entitled This Loud Morning. Cook debuted his first single “The Last Good Bye” during the top 7 results night of the 10th season of American Idol. It sold 22,000 copies in its first week and took the number five spot at the Bubbling Under Hot 100 chart. “Fade into Me” is the second single from This Loud Morning.

Cook’s musical career started at an early age. He used to perform during parent-teacher assemblies when he was in grade school. Aside from performing in musicals while he was in high school, he formed a band called Axium.  His band had a taste of success when one of their songs, entitled “Hold,” was selected to be played in movie theaters across the United States. The band was named one of the top 15 independent bands in the country by Got Milk? and was named the best Kansas City band in 2004. They were also able to produce three studio albums entitled Matter of Time, Blindsided and The Story Thus Far. They also had several live albums that included Alive in Tulsa. Cook, who was raised in Missouri, moved to Oklahoma after college to continue his musical career. He worked as a bartender to support himself.

Cook’s Idol success had been unexpected as he didn’t originally intend to try out for the singing competition-reality show. He only went to the auditions in Omaha, Nebraska, to accompany his younger brother, who failed to make it to Hollywood. The Season 7 Idol winner only auditioned after a show producer noticed him. His remarkable performance of his audition song “Livin’ on a Prayer” by Bon Jovi earned him three yeses from Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul. He was never at the bottom three the entire competition.
