443rd Cebu Province Anniversary
The provincial government has been very busy getting ready for the 443rd Cebu Province Anniversary this August. In fact, 30-second television and radio advertisements were produced and released last month to attract visitors.
The anniversary is commemorated on Monday, August 6, which was declared by Governor Gwen Garcia as a special non-working holiday. The governor expects the full participation of local officials in the activities, which will last two weeks. She told the media that these activities will be “reflective of how far we have come and how much we have achieved as one united province.”
The anniversary celebrations commence on August 1, with a formal flag ceremony attended by government officials. It will be followed by the opening of the Argao Trade Fair and photo exhibit. The new season of the governor’s flagship programs will also be launched. These programs include the Obra Negosyo Eskwela, Turismo Sugbo, Horse Show and Competition, Air-soft Open, Unity Volleyball Cup, and the Expanded Green and Wholesome Environment that Nurtures.
Pasigarbo sa Sugbo
Cebu has over 40 existing festivals held yearly in different towns and municipalities. The vibrant showdown of these festivals is the Pasigarbo sa Sugbo, which is dubbed as the festival of festivals. The competition takes place on August 11.
Each year, participating dance groups aim not only to win, but to showcase what their place has to offer. In 2011, the Kabkaban Festival of Carcar City bagged the grand prize. Isda Festival of Madridejos and La Torta Festival of Argao came in second and third, respectively.
One Cebu Expo
The Capitol is expecting at least 400 exhibitors in the Obra Negosyo Enhancement Countryside Enterprise and Business Upliftment or simply called One Cebu Expo. The exhibitors are composed of private companies and micro-entrepreneurs from the countryside. Held at the Cebu International Convention Center (CICC), the expo opens on August 3 and ends with a midnight sale on August 13. The Obra Negosyo Eskwela Symposium will be on August 10.
The expo will feature top-notch Cebuano products like furniture, home accessories, toys, gift items, fashion accessories, food, and a lot more. The members of the Portrait Artist Society of the Philippines will also put up their booths and showcase their amazing works.
Cebu Challenge Cycling Classic
The Prologue race of the biggest cycling tour in Cebu will be on August 9, at the South Road Properties (SRP). The individual time trial that spans 40 kilometers will determine who will qualify for the next stage. Stage 2 happens on August 10, where bikers will ride from the Cebu Provincial Capitol to Bogo City, covering 101.7 kilometers. The next day, they will race from Bogo to Toledo City and cover 86.9 kilometers. On August 11, the riders will have to bear a grueling race from Toledo to Argao that spans 186.7 kilometers.

The country’s best cycling teams are getting ready to compete in the Cebu Challenge Cycling Classic from August 8 to 12, 2012. About 20 cycling teams are expected to compete for the cash prizes amounting to more than Php500,000. Among the teams that will compete in the race that takes riders through 439.5 kilometers are Team LBC, Navy, the Air Force, and the Durano group.
The concluding stage of the five-day event will be a 60-kilometer criterium circuit race that will end at the (CICC) in Mandaue City.
Cobra Ironman 70.3 Philippines Triathlon Race
The Ironman 70.3 Philippines Triathlon Race on August 5 is one of the biggest events in the 443rd anniversary of the province. More than 1,700 triathletes from all over the world will be participating in the event sponsored by Cobra Energy Drink.
This year’s Cobra Ironman 70.3 guarantees to be the biggest and most challenging edition thus far, where participants are set to swim in the sea for the first time. In the past three years, racers swam in a man-made lake. The 1.2-kilometer swim will begin at the beach of Shangri-la’s Mactan Resort and Spa.
A number of elite foreign triathletes are expected to join, led by back-to-back overall champion Pete Jacobs from Australia, who is aiming to get a “three-peat.” New Zealander Terenzo Bozzone, is also aspiring to take back the crown he won in 2009.
On the other hand, a first-rate cast of Filipino bets, led by three Cobra Energy Drink brand ambassadors Arland Macasieb, Noy Jopson, and Neil Catiil, is eyeing the Ironman triathlon crown as well.
Other 44rd Cebu Province Anniversary events to watch out for are the One Cebu Car Show, Business Summit and Agro Fair. The Governor’s Ball on August 10 will recognize the Garbo sa Sugbo awardees.
