Summer Workshops in Cebu

Are you looking for a fun way to spend summer? Here are a number of workshops that you can choose to enroll in to have both an interesting and educational vacation.

Dance

If you are into dancing and learning new dance moves, then allow the Knapsack Dancers to teach you how to dougie and more with their summer workshop. Classes are held at the Sinulog Hall of the Rizal Memorial Library and Museum. You can learn either contempo, hip hop, fire dancing, or Capoeira. Joy Verula, a professional dancer, is also offering a summer dance workshop, specifically teaching bellynisian, modern dance, and fire dancing, which is this year’s highlight. Bellynisian is a sensual dance that combines the essences of belly dancing and Polynesian dancing, which she offers to children 5 years old and above. Her modern dance techniques combine hip hop and jazz for kids from 5 years old until 11 years old. Each class is considered a private workshop, which is comprised of 15 one-hour sessions conducted from Monday to Friday.

Ms. Verula’s workshop will officially start on April 16 and will culminate on May 18, 2012. Classes will be held at the Camella Fitness Center located at Camella Homes, in Pajac, Lapu-Lapu City. The schedule for the bellynisian class is at 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., followed immediately by the Modern Dance class at 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 am. Classes for poi fire dancing are at 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Music

The Benedict School of Music is inviting music enthusiasts to join their 5th Music Workshop this Summer 2012. The theme for this year’s workshop is “Music Inspires; Music Heals.” The school offers lessons in voice, piano, violin, drums, and banduria. You also have options for guitar (acoustic/electric/bass) and keyboard or portasound lessons. The school practices a one-on-one approach. The workshop will have 12 sessions, each session lasting for an hour.

Theater

If you wish to be on stage or in front of the cameras someday, there are also a number of theater workshops for those who would like to hone their skills in acting. Little Boy Productions will conduct a workshop for kids and teenagers. Repertory Philippines actress Jill Pena, Niel Kintanar, Rhea Fantonial Bautista, and Nicco Manalo are amongst the teachers who will run a total of 16 theater workshop sessions. Classes will begin on April 16 and will culminate with a show on May 6, 2012. The culminating performance will be at the 240-seat theater Marcelo Fernan Press Center, in Lahug, Cebu City.

The schedule for kids aged 4 to 6 years old will be held from 9:45 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., from Monday to Friday. Children aged 7 to 10 years old will be held from 8:15 a.m. to 9:45 a.m., from Monday to Friday. Musical Theater for teenagers aged 11 years old and above will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., from Tuesday to Friday, and from 8:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. every Saturday.

Registration is ongoing and held at the Little Boy Productions office located at the third floor of Manros Plaza Building, just across Foodarama, Mango Avenue, Cebu City. From April 16 to May 5, there will be 15 sessions. Classes will be conducted at the Cebu Centre for Dance Studios located near the Redemptorist Church.

Fashion

For those of you who wish to learn the techniques of hair and make-up artists, you can register with the Fashion Institute of Design & Arts Cebu for their 5-day Basic Hair & Make-up Workshop. For only Php6,500, you can learn Rhino Deiparine’s techniques in five days beginning April 23, 2012. Classes are held from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

FIDA also conducts a Fashion Arts & Crafts Summer Camp for young boys and girls aged 4 to 12 years old.

Arts

A Summer Art Workshop is offered by the Fine Arts Students Organization of the University of the Philippines Cebu College. The courses offered include Art Appreciation, Art and Design, Advanced Drawing, Painting, Children’s Theater, and Teen Theater. Art Appreciation is for kids aged 4 to 6 years old. Art and Design is divided into two classes, class A is for kids aged 7 to 9 years old while class B is for kids aged 10 to 12 years old. Advanced Drawing and Painting are for children aged 12 years old and above. Kids aged 4 to 9 years old can enroll for Children’s Theater and those aged 10 to 16 years old can take up Teen Theater.

Registration is until April 20, 2012, and the fee is Php2,000. The workshops start on April 16 and end on May 11, 2012. Interested parties may register at the UPC Undergraduate Building. J Centre Mall and Casino Espanol are also venues for summer art workshops, which will run from April 16 to May 11, 2012. There will be 12 sessions conducted three times a week and each session will be for two hours. Number of students per class is limited to 15. The workshop fee is Php4,500 without materials.

The proposed workshop schedule for basic classes is Monday-Wednesday-Friday (MWF) from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., and 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. For advanced classes, the proposed workshop schedule is Tuesday-Thursday-Saturday (TThS) from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., and 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

These workshops will be capped with an exhibit of the students’ masterpieces on May 19, 2012, at the i2 Building at the Asiatown I.T. Park Cebu City.
