Pescador Island

Pescador Island is a famous marine park in Moalboal. It is a small island very close to Moalboal situated at the west coast of Cebu. The waters are extremely deep (600 m in Tañon Strait), clear (up to 35-40 m visibility), cool in temperature (27-29 °C) and rich in biodiversity.

pi1 Pescador IslandPescador Island is every diver’s dream, with its easy access from the shore and wide range of dive sites from shallow to deep dives. It is also a fantastic place to go snorkeling. The waters’ visibility here is usually very clear and you can enjoy the beautiful corals that are abundant in the area. It has a plateau that surrounds the island. On the northeast side of the reef plateau one can find several large rocks and coral heads that majestically reach the surface. The reef plateau slopes down to around 8 – 10 meters where it then drops vertically into the abyss. It is a wall dive with overhangs and small caverns and holes in the reef wall where one can enter and exit. Colorful acropora and stony hard corals are seen on the upper plateau.

Going deeper, you can discover magnificent soft corals. You would commonly find stonefish and white frogfish on the reef wall. The reef is teeming with life and you can enjoy swimming with turtles, frog fish, pilot fish, Nudibranch and many species of reef fish. There are also lionfish, snappers, groupers, scorpionfish and sweetlips you can find at every depth. On deeper dives, whitetip sharks and hammerhead sharks are not uncommon. There are also tiger sharks and thresher sharks that appear less frequently. Black coral, sponges and sea fans will also amuse you.The southwest side of the plateau is quite similar in topography. There you can also find pink and blue soft corals.

How to Get There

Moalboal is 90 kilometers southwest of Cebu City and can be reached by bus from the South Bus Terminal. The bus ride would take approximately 2.5 hours. Panagsama Beach is 3 km from the center. Pescador Island is a 10-minute 3-km boat ride from Panagsama Beach.

Dolphin House in Moalboal

The Municipality of Moalboal in the southwestern portion of the province of Cebu has become a famous tourist destination due to the presence of several dive sites surrounding the town, which includes the Dolphin House dive spot. The dive spots in Moalboal offer a magnificent sight of coral reefs and exotic marine plants and animals. Some of the diving spots are protected marine parks or sanctuaries.

The Dolphin House dive site is located on the northern part of Panagsama reef and is about 10 to 15 minutes by motorized boat ride from Panagsama Beach. The dive site is also good for snorkeling enthusiasts.

The dive site starts with a wall going to 25 meters where there is a sandy slope. When you go halfway into the dive between 17 meters and 22 meters deep, you will see many small caves. If you look inside the caves, there is a very good chance you will see some Moray eels and turtles. An attraction of this dive site is the wall canyons where you will see some big colorful sea fans and nice Black Corals at 20 meters deep.

The reef fishes you will see include Fusiliers, Damselfish, Anthias fish, Angelfish, Butterfly fish, Puffer fish and Moorish idol and if you are lucky, you will sometimes see some whitetip sharks and whale sharks. Other marine animals you will see are pygmy sea horses and shrimps.

Location

The Dolphin House dive site is located in the Municipality of Moalboal, which is in the southwest coast of Cebu and about 88 kilometers from Cebu City. A variety of Ceres and Librando buses and some vans for hire at the Cebu South Bus Terminal ply the route going to Moalboal. The estimated travel time from Cebu City to Moalboal is about 2 ½ hours. Once you get to Moalboal, you can ask tricycle drivers to take you to the resort.
