Naturally Cebu: Relaxing Retreats from the Madness

One of the three waterfalls at Kawasan, Badian.
My big summer break during 2005 came when my boss at that time felt two things: extreme generosity, and a craving for a much-needed sunburn. The former goaded him to invite a privileged 20 employees to an island-hopping excursion he had been eyeing for quite some time. Being the adventure freak that I am, I packed up my swim clothes and sun-protection lotion to what could be a fun day with those little Nemos.
We truly had a grand time snorkeling, eating, and strolling through the white sand beaches of the tiny islands of Nalusuan and Hilutungan, just around 15-20 klicks east of Mactan Island. The most striking aspect of that trip was the accessibility of such a trip. You cannot do that in Mumbai, or much-less in landlocked Denver or Houston, no matter how much you have those beach bum genes inside you.
It’s all very fortunate for us modern city dwellers that we could dispatch ourselves in a moment’s notice to the azure-clear waters of tropical Philippines. For most of us, the twin blessings of first-world development and preserved tropical nirvanas in one metropolis seem so good to be true. Cebu’s inhabitants are obviously gifted with these unique ingredients in that they can boldly set foot into the frontyard of technology and relax in the backyard of natural bliss.
One thing though. We just wish you were a Cebu native. We could take those skin-blistering journeys together like school kids playing sweaty tag. If you’re not, we’ll still treat you all the same. Come, and we’ll welcome you as a world-class, professional islander.
