HAPPY 446th FOUNDING ANNIVERSARY, Cebu! It was on this day that we were recognized as one province. But did we ever take to heart that our story as one province is impossible to recall without remembering one of the most well-known battles in history on, what Cebu is known for best, a beach on an island ruled by a datu (chief) named Lapulapu? That was also when our country’s fight for independence truly began.
Ferdinand Magellan arrived in Cebu on April 5, 1521 and succeeded converting the datu, Rajah Humabon, the chief of Cebu, and his people making them submit to the Spanish crown. After his success on the mainland, he set his eyes on the island of Mactan, ruled by another datu, Lapulapu.
It was Magellan’s greatest mistake, however. Luck was not on his side. The low tide exposed sandbars that prevented his ship from landing near shore which meant he and his soldiers had wade in shallow waters. The Spanish underestimated their enemies’ abilities in combat and failed to rightfully assess the conditions of the area if they were favorable to their party. The soft wet, sand with their heavy armor and equipment made the fight against the skilled warriors, who outnumbered them, more challenging for Magellan and his men. It resulted in the end of the infamous conquistador (conqueror).
The Battle of Mactan is such an iconic part of our history as it was the first resistance against the Spanish invaders that in GMA Channel’s video of Lupang Hinirang, which shows reenactments of significant events that shaped Philippine history, Lapulapu’s victory over Magellan and his men is the opening scene. In less than 30 seconds, it encapsulates the importance of the event and the character of the mighty warrior that Lapulapu is remembered as. Watch it below.
