A motor-operated banca carrying 173 people sank just a kilometer from the pier of Ormoc City. Reports state that 36 have drowned, 118 have been rescued while 21 remain missing.
The news was confirmed by the Ormoc City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO). According to the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), the incident occurred at 12:50 pm.
16 of those on board the MV Kim Nirvana-B were crew. There was also allegedly 1 foreigner on the boat but it still remains to be confirmed.
One survivor said that aside from the passengers, the boat was also carrying numerous sacks filled with rice and cement but Philippine Coast Guard Capt. Pedro Tinampay says that the total capacity of the banca was 178 passengers, ruling out overloading as the cause of the mishap.
