Senior citizens in Cebu might soon be able to enjoy their retirement years even more! Cebu City Councilor Richard Osmeña is proposing an ordinance that would allow senior citizens to watch movies for FREE! Movie theater owners are supporting the proposal and they have some suggestions.
1.) SM Cinema Theater manager, Macky Rosero, said the ordinance should specify what kind of movies, since there is a wide range such as regular and super blockbuster. She suggested that senior citizens will be able to watch regular movies for free during the first week of screening on Mondays and Tuesdays while “on top of that, we would like to add that senior citizens will be allowed second week of super blockbuster movies.” Gaisano Cineplex, on the other hand, suggests to have the free movie viewing by senior citizens only Mondays. They reasoned “to make it two days could hamper the primary business interests as Tuesdays to Sundays, including holidays, were observed to have a good deal of movie patrons.”
2.) Rosero also requested that the senior citizens’ free viewing shouldn’t be allowed in special theaters such 4D and IMAX because of the high costs of these types of theaters. An IMAX ticket would range from P250-P400 while a ticket for the 4D Theater costs P400.
3.) Rosero asked the government to clarify whether they will be subsidizing part of the costs. “I did not see here in the proposed ordinance the absorption of the fees because what we have in Bacolod, in our memorandum of agreement, it was stated there that certain percentage will be subsidized by the City. I would like to ask if it will be included also.”
4.) The Colon Heritage Realty Corp. (CHRC) President Jose Mari Cañizares proposed it should be included in the proposed ordinance that the free access would not be allowed in the exclusive use of a theater by a third party.
Ayala Cinemas are already way ahead of the pack, offering free movie viewing to senior citizens on Mondays and Tuesdays. Whichever of the additional statements are added to the proposal, it’s pretty much a steal. Plus, that senior citizen card guarantees discounts on the popcorn and drinks. As for the rest of us, we’ll just have to wait when we reach the big 6-Oh (60) to enjoy all that. Maybe the old line should be changed into “Life begins at 60.”
