At the Meet the Pros last Friday, August 31, 2015 for the Ironman 70.3 Cobra 2015, Sunrise Events, Inc. (SEI), the organizers of the recent triathlon, announced they received approval to host the 2016 Ironman 70.3 Asia-Pacific Championships in Cebu!
Ironman Asia-Pacific Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Geoff Meyer said “It’s an exciting time for the sport of triathlon in Asia-Pacific. With our ongoing expansion in Asia that includes 14 IRONMAN and IRONMAN 70.3 events combined with tens of thousands of athletes living and competing in the region – it’s the right time to host a championship race here. Cebu also hosted the successful Ironman 70.3 Philippines triathlon for the past five years – and will provide our athletes a beautiful and challenging championship course.”
CEO Meyer said that Auckland, New Zealand had been the host for the region’s championships for the past 3 consecutive years. “It’s time to have it in another part of Asia,” the Ironman management decided. “Cebu is very deserving to be awarded as host.”
The 2016 Championship in Cebu will be the start of rotating the event around different locations in the Asia Pacific but SEI hopes to convince the officials of the infamous triathlon to make Cebu a regular championship host by managing it well.
The events organizing company expressed pride and gratitude for the opportunity. “We intend to stage our best event yet which will coincide with our five-year anniversary in Cebu and our eighth year in partnership with Ironman. We look forward to welcoming everyone with our trademark Filipino hospitality,” guaranteed SEI Pres. and Chairman of the Board of Directors, Wilfred Steven Uytengsu.
Better roads and other improvements in Cebu are expected as part of SEI’s promise to “continue to be a spectator-friendly race.” Sec. Ramon Jimenez of the Department of Tourism (DOT) said, “Our country’s hosting of this competition in Cebu completes the picture of the Philippines not only as a travel destination, but also as a competitive sports destination in Asia where major global events can be held. Over the years, the Ironman has become a testament of the human spirit and will. It has challenged and tested many athletes, pushing participants to their limit. The race has attracted different people around the world, including Filipinos, who are known for their perseverance, determination, and endurance.”
