Cebu cops have been looking for new ways to help the people of Cebu. Last Friday, July 24, 2015, 44 officers from the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) and 85 cops from the Police Regional Office (PRO) 7 joined civilians and members of business establishments in the bloodletting activity that lasted began at 8:00 AM until 5:00 PM. Each officer donated 500 cubic centimeters (cc) of blood, amounting to a total of 64,500 cc.
Police-community relations (PCR) chief of CCPO, Supt. Enrique Belciña, described the event as evidence of the officers’ commitment to the citizens they protect. In an interview with Sun.Star, Belciña shared, “Nindot gyod ang feeling nga inig human og tusok sa dagom naay self-fulfillment ba nga naa na pod tay maluwas nga kinabuhi sa lahi pod nga pamaagi (It feels good to have a sense of fulfillment after the prick of the needle that we’ve saved another life in a different way).”
In honor of July being the month of both blood donation and Precious Blood of Jesus, the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) and the Philippine Red Cross joined hands in arranging the activity. Belciña commended the two organizations for the program, saying that everything was prepared so that all the police had to do was attend and donate blood.
Earlier this year, the CCPO received an award as the best in the police force for community involvement. Their activities included independently-organized events aimed at different members of the community.
Sadly, some officers were not able to participate in the bloodletting but for valid reasons. “Dili tanan makuhaan; it’s because naa’y uban kulang og hemoglobin, ug uban pa. But gamay ra man hinuon. (Not all could have blood extracted due to low hemoglobin count and other factors),” Belciña told The Freeman but he continues to encourage anyone looking for blood donors to visit the headquarters to see if any of the officers would be able to give the needed blood type. Call them at 233-6795/233-0762 or send them a fax via 233-6705. Better yet, see them personally at Camp Sotero Cabahug, Gorordo Ave., Cebu City.
You can also contact the Philippine Red Cross Cebu Chapter if you would like to donate blood or know someone who needs it. Send a message to their Facebook page or call them at 253-9793. Their office is located at Osmeña Boulevard, Cebu City.
