At 8:50 pm yesterday, June 15, 2015, Monday, the ceiling of Ayala Cinema 5 collapsed. The cinema was being used exclusively by an Australian-based BPO, Dreamscape Networks, for the launching of a new video advertisement. Approximately 300 people were present at the event.
The incident was caught on camera by Charles Chamberlaine Igot, an employee of the said BPO who attended the event. In the video, you will see that water was already pouring out from a portion of the ceiling that was already missing, and the people have moved towards the corners of the theater to avoid getting drenched. It was only until 0:39 of the video that the ceiling started to collapse.
6 were reported to have been injured with 1 of them sent to the hospital for treatment.
The company will be filing a complaint against the mall. Chief Executive Officer of Dreamscape Networks, Mark Evans, said there was no emergency response sent by the management. They were already evacuating people when the security guards entered the cinema. Reports vary as to how long it took before the guards arrived, approximately 15-25 minutes. The water source was not immediately shut off, as everyone was preoccupied with the evacuation.
Jeanette Japzon, Corporate Communications Manager of Cebu Holdings Inc. (CHI), the marketing arm of Ayala Center Cebu, said that what collapsed was the acoustic ceiling of the cinema which was made of light materials. Rescue units were at the scene last night and investigation to determine the cause of the incident is still ongoing.
