The visit of Pope Francis in the country is already a thing to be grateful for, but the Sandiego Dance Company must be blessed to get an extension of not only seeing the pope but performing for him in his mass in Manila.
Unfortunately, the date of their performance is simultaneous with the Sinulog festival, where they have always participated. They have been a part of the traditions and so, the Sandiego family made a way to be in two places at the same time. They let their new dancers take their place with the same spirit and vigor. Anyways, when or why did this devotion actually start, we’ll find out.
The family tradition of attending and participating in the Sinulog parade started when the mother of the current choreographer, Val, has introduced the festive feel into the Sinulog celebration together with then Cebu City Mayor Florentino Solon. Val’s mother researched and borrowed Nang Titang Diola’s steps to be incorporated in the Sinulog dance.
Today, members of the Sandiego Dance Company are not only family members but mostly working men and women who find time to practice for Sinulog. They usually commit themselves into dancing for the festival as a way of thanksgiving and prayer.
Val himself thanked God when their house was consumed by fire years back. The costumes which should be used for their performance during the Sinulog turned to ashes. As if, like a miracle, they were able to dance wholeheartedly still in the Sinulog parade clad only with white T-shirts and plain pants.
