Mariquita “Kit” Salimbangon Yeung, who grew up in Barangay Curva in the northern Cebu town of Medellin, is the founder and chairperson of a humanitarian organization that bears her name, the Mariquita Salimbangon Yeung Charitable Foundation Inc. or MSYCFI. Established in 1991 with a few of her close friends, the foundation is the local partner of Operation Smile, the international volunteer organization providing free reconstructive surgery for cleft lip, cleft palate, and other facial malformations.
She attended high school in Tindog, a town next to Medellin, and studied for an education degree at the University of San Carlos. Her father Martin Salimbangon was a schoolteacher and an unofficial village elder of their barangay. She met her husband Carlos Yeung, a Chinese businessman, when she was visiting her sister-in-law in Hong Kong.
When MSYCFI first brought Operation Smile to Cebu, doctors operated on about four hundred children. Operation Smile has returned to Cebu many times since then. Mariquita S. Yeung is also on the board of governors of Operation Smile.
Along with nine other Cebuanas, she was conferred the title Dame of the Order of St. Sylvester on May 25, 2011, for charity work and service to the church. This conferment is one of the five Papal Awards of Chivalry. In addition to her charity work, Yeung leads the Cebu Beautification Movement and the Osmeña Boulevard Beautification Project.
