Brazilian Jiu-jitsu (BJJ) is a form of martial art and combat sport that is currently gaining popularity in the Philippines. Here in the Queen City of the South, the first and only BJJ team is Deftac Cebu, which is quickly becoming a force to be reckoned with. It is considered as the most dominant Filipino team outside Metro Manila.
Established in April 2008, Deftac Cebu is spearheaded by Norman Go. The organization is supervised by Alvin Aguilar, the founder of the Manila-based Deftac and the only Filipino first-degree black belter in BJJ. Go is currently a holder of a brown belt, which was granted by Aguilar.
Deftac Cebu provides “guidance and the highest quality training possible” for leisure or competition to all of its members. They take pride on an ego-free environment with training emphasizing on teamwork. In order for a member to meet their expectations and goals, Go personally assists them. He always provides detailed instructions that are tailor-fitted for every member’s game.
Members are regularly given development seminars and activities conducted by Aguilar, who is the only representative of the Ribeiro Jiu-Jitsu Association in Asia and the founder of Universal Reality Combat Championship (URCC). Fighters are evaluated and awarded with appropriate belts to signify their ranks. To be promoted to a higher rank, they are judged based on technical proficiency, sparring IQ and emotional content.
Deftac Cebu holds in-house tournaments and sends its deserving members to compete in local, national and international tournaments. The team sent 15 competitors to the 2012 Pan Asian Jiu-Jitsu Gi & No-Gi International, and took home two gold, seven silver, and seven bronze medals, with a total of 16 medals. Deftac Cebu fighter Vaughn “The Spawn” Donayrem is rapidly becoming a household name in Philippine mixed martial arts. He is currently undefeated in the URCC. He extended his winning streak to four after he beat Allan Atup in a submission.
Deftac is a martial arts organization founded in 1996. Its founding members led the Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and mixed martial arts movement in the country. It aims to provide all members with world-class instruction in all aspects of martial arts. Deftac members are considered a big family, united to help one another in achieving their goals.
Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is a self defense system that is basically centered on ground fighting and grappling. It originated from Kodokan Judo ground fighting (also called Ne-Waza) fundamentals that Master Mitsuyo Maeda taught to Carlos Gracie. From the Judo knowledge of Carlos and Helio Gracie, BJJ came to be in the year 1914. This martial art focuses on getting the opponent to the ground to be able to utilize ground combat techniques and submission holds that include chokeholds and joint-locks.
