Steve Benitez and Bo’s Coffee
With the globalized coffee mania, one Cebuano brand continues to soar among its local and international competitors.
Bo’s Coffee is known for its great coffee concoctions and cozy atmosphere. It is popular among students and professionals looking for a comfortable place to study or meet up, as well as to people during lazy afternoons who just want to hang out.
The coffee shop that has more than 40 branches in the Philippines is owned and founded by Steve Benitez. Born and raised in Cebu City, Benitez started his love affair with coffee to sustain him during long hours of studying law at the Ateneo de Manila University. Benitez’s interest in the drink urged him to attend various international seminars and trainings. On June 1996, Bo’s Coffee first opened its doors in Ayala Center Cebu.
To ensure the freshness of their coffee, newly roasted beans are shipped to outlets in three days and consumed within two to three weeks. Non-consumed items are immediately disposed. The roasted date is displayed in every Bo’s coffee packaging for guidance.
Ninety percent of the coffee beans used are locally sourced from coffee plantations in Benguet, Bukidnon, Cordillera, Sultan Kudarat and the Mountain Provinces, to name a few.
In an interview with PLDT SME Nation, Benitez shares that in order for a business to be successful, it is important to invest in human assets. He said that they train their staff to be sensitive when it comes to customer service, so their patrons would come back. The CEO also encourages his staff to come up with new ideas and to think like entrepreneurs. When somebody comes up with something new, they broadcast it throughout the entire company. For example, they announce that a certain coffee blend was invented by their barista.
For his success in the coffee business, the Cebuano entrepreneur gives back to the community. Since his main concerns are children, education and environment, his company sponsors a milk cooperative feeding program and Operation Smile for cleft palate patients, among others.
Among the various kinds and flavors, what’s your favorite Bo’s Coffee concoction?
