Cebu is famous for their Su-Tu-Kil, which we can proudly say is the ultimate seafood experience. The Su-Tu-Kil is also popularly known as STK. The acronym stands for three types of cooking fresh seafood, specifically Sugba (Grill), Tuwa (Soup), and Kilaw (Raw).
STK is not a single establishment but a number of restaurants serving fresh seafood choices prepared either as located near the historical Mactan Shrine in Lapu-Lapu City. These are situated to the left side of the Mactan Shrine and beside a police precinct. You will also pass by souvenir shops that sell accessories made from shells and other native products before you reach the place.
When you enter the STK area, several people will greet you and convince you to dine in their restaurant. Some will even be plucky enough to drag you towards their Su-Tu-Kil restaurant. If you want to search for a restaurant on your own, you can be direct with the vendors and politely tell them off by saying that you can manage by yourself.
There are a number of restaurants that you can choose from. The STK restaurants in the Mactan area serve different kinds of fish and seafood, such as lobsters, clams, shrimps, crabs, and scallops. Popular fish choices are the parrot fish (locally known as Molmol) and the Lapu-lapu variety, which is named after the Cebuano hero.
Not every STK restaurant is the same as some can be more expensive than others. When these stalls started out, the prices used to be really friendly to locals. Over time though, they have grown to cater principally to foreigners and have adjusted to accommodate foreign budgets. No one can argue about the freshness and the delicious taste of su-tu-kil but the prices attached to the menu may no longer be as tempting. Some customers even report that there are establishments who seem to serve food of a lesser quantity that what they have personally selected from their fresh fish or seafood selection. Although no concrete evidence of these complaints has been produced, we suggest that diners be extra mindful of what they have ordered so as to avoid being cheated.
The popularity of STK has also expanded from Mactan to Cebu City, which according to a number of locals is a safer place to satisfy su-tu-kil cravings. While in Cebu City, you can also check out STK ta Bay! at the Capitol Site or any of the branches of AA’s restaurant for a personal Su-Tu-Kil experience.
