“A place to relax and to enjoy the beautiful landscape, culture, heritage-inspired architecture, music and fine wine in the current fast paced and city’s hustle and bustle.”
Privately nestled in Sanjercasvil Road, Gorordo Avenue, Lahug (right next to USPF’s back gate), this new gastronomic discovery boasts of an elegant yet cozy atmosphere. Since it used to be a colonial house, any dining experience in Circa 1900 will truly feel like HOME.
The term “circa” means “more or less”, making it a perfect name for the restaurant since it is believed to be built around 1900’s. It was bought by the Primary Properties Corporation in 2010, and the company decided to let the owners of Canvas Bistro, Bar & Gallery, Chef Steve Shrimski and wife Estrella Shrimski, serve as operating managers of the all-white restaurant, piano bar and function venue.
Apart from the awesome venue, Circa 1900 also takes pride in their fresh food. What sets them apart from other restaurants serving international cuisines? Well, they make use of local products and even get their ingredients from their own backyard garden!
During the opening, Chef Steve and his friendly service crew served complimentary food at the restaurant’s ground floor. After which, all guests were invited to the 2nd floor, where the main dining area, piano/lounge area, wine bar, veranda, and private room can be found. 3 delicious meals as main menu and 4 tongue-tickling desserts were then served with white and red wines while some soothing background music was played, credits to the special guest who played the house’s antique piano and the invited jazz band.
I also had the chance to talk with Mrs. Estrella Shrimski, and when asked about the difference of Circa 1900 to the rest of Cebu’s restaurants offering international cuisines, she simply answered “This is home.. the atmosphere is non pretentious and we work hard to perfect our services. Our food is also original and fresh, and the venue sets the mood.” She was also proud to point out that their location is private, peaceful and quiet, giving guests some pure relaxation.
Another thing that sets Circa 1900 apart from other restaurants in Cebu is its advocacy for music, arts, culture, and environment. A great proof of this is their exhibition/concessionaire area in the ground floor’s dining area, which aims to showcase artworks and local products from The National Farming Cooperative.
