Cebuano manufacturers are recognized for their excellent designs, competence and craftsmanship, which is why Cebu is dubbed as a design destination. In furniture and fashion accessories, Cebu designers make use of native materials such as abaca (manila hemp), sea grass, butay (coconut twig), and arorog combined with rattan, wood, stone bamboo, and wrought iron. Other materials include shells, animal skins, seeds, tree barks, and leaves. People from the western countries simply love Cebuano products because of their distinctive look and superb quality.

One of the most talented Cebuano designers in terms of furniture accessories is Janice Minor. Pioneering in the use of mixed media in furniture manufacturing, Minor founded the Janice Minor Export Inc. in September 1986.  With the help of her supportive husband, Paul, the company has become one of the leading exporters of furniture and home accessories in the Philippines. In 1993, it has received the most sought-after Golden Shell Award for its outstanding performance in exports. It has also obtained five Katha Awards for design excellence at the Manila International Trade Fairs.

Janice Minor products are divided into interesting groups of items based on a theme that can be identified by a particular collection name. For instance, they have a fine antique stone collection of urns, jars, and human and animal figurines. Another example is the blown glass collection that features sophisticated trays, vases and other ornaments. All their creations exude class, which greatly improves the entire aura of simple homes, offices and other spaces.

Minor joins the skilled Cebuano furniture makers that make up 60% of the Philippine exports. We all know that Cebu is recognized as the furniture capital of the Philippines. Her furniture company also plays a major role in the international scene. The exceptional creations of Janice Minor Export Inc. are able to reach Europe, North America, Latin America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Middle East, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Japan.

Janice Minor Export Inc. is affiliated with the European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines (ECCP), the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI), the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM), the Cebu Furniture Industries Foundation (CFIF), the Chamber of Furniture Industries of the Philippines (CFIP), and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI). The company has showcased its products here and abroad through trade fairs like the Furniture Fair in Cebu organized by the PIFS/CFIF, Furniture Fair in Manila organized by the PIFS/CFIP, Gifts & Houseware Fair organized by Manila Fame, IMM Cologne (internationale möbelmesse), Ambiente Frankfurt Fair, and Tendence Frankfurt Fair.

Minor’s success does not just end in her furniture business. In June 2004, Binibini by Janice Minor was launched to cater to jewelry and accessory lovers. Her creations are truly unique, making use of finely crafted trinkets out of Philippine gemstones. These include Philippine petrified wood, onyx, jaspers, pyrite, archipelagic malachite, chalcedony, and amethyst and tectiles. Minor describes her jewelry collection as “Philippine womanhood in full bloom” that beyond doubt exudes “confidence, maturity, and elegance at home in any age and culture.”

Showing that she does not settle for ordinary things, Minor has led the way in sourcing, processing and innovating these distinctive gemstones to be used as fashion jewelry. This is actually the first time that this kind of innovation has been done. The gemstones are quite inimitable in their striations and colors, which come from amazing infusion of minerals. In addition, their shapes are organically asymmetric and go through a meticulous process to retain their natural qualities.

People who see her impressive creations could not help but be bedazzled. Since each Binibini jewelry is wrought by hand, you are assured that you will get the best value for your money. Binibini by Janice Minor also produces exceptional belts, bags, shoes, and hats that should be included in every woman’s collection.

Everything that Minor creates, whether furniture or fashion accessories, is indeed a long-lasting statement of beauty. Adding to her impressive resume is being able to create the exquisite crown worn by Miss Cebu 2011 Mia Zeeba Faridoon. The crown was elegantly embellished with Swarovski crystals and rhinestones, which was said to be a striking improvement of the previous crowns worn from 2003 to 2010. The experience of making the crown was extra special for Minor because she was crowned the first ever Miss Cebu in 1984.

In her interview with Cebu Daily News, the designer shared her first experience in making a pageant crown. Known as a world-class exporter of home and furniture accessories, Minor was uncertain at first. “I will tell you frankly I have never made a crown in my life. In fact I was hesitant to take the job because I have never done that before. Since they were right in saying it would mean something special coming from a former Ms. Cebu so I made myself do it,” Minor said.

Although the Cebu City Tourism Commission gave her a limited time, which was only a few days before Christmas, it didn’t take her long to do the piece since she already had the materials available in her factory in Lapu-Lapu. She went crazy with the rhinestones and zirconium, lavishly filling the crown’s core that was shaped by hand. The former Ms. Cebu was proud of her creation and she believed that whoever would wear it would love it. She found it satisfying to make something she would wear herself. Indeed, Faridoon looked more dashing with the one-of-a-kind headpiece.
