Vicky A. Dy
Regardless of being a licensed medical technologist, Vicky A. Dy worked in the service crew of a Dunkin’ Donuts outlet in Cebu because she wanted to learn from being an employee of Cebuano businessman Jonathan Gesalem, whom she considers her mentor. At this time, which was in the early 1990s, she was also studying business administration at the University of San Carlos.
While Dy was working for Dunkin’ Donuts, she was noticed by Gesalem as someone with good potential in marketing, so he made her the first staff member of the Dunkin’ Donuts marketing department, which Gesalem created about three months after Dy started working for the company. Later, Dy became marketing manager of Dunkin’ Donuts until she left in 2005 to achieve her dream of creating and managing a business of her own.
Dy opened Ad Network Corp., a branding, marketing, and consultancy firm, with an initial investment of around 150 thousand pesos. She started by buying computers needed for the firm’s services and opening the firm’s office.
After several years of operations, Ad Network Corp. marketing and branding services include conceptualization, design, printing, delivery, and logistics support for their clients’ marketing collateral. A number of long-term clients make use of their services.
As the youngest of eight offspring born to Chinese parents who were in the copra-trading business, Dy said her family is where she developed her competitiveness to excel and succeed in her endeavors. She attended grade school and high school at Cebu Eastern College and took up medical technology at Velez College.
Even though her interest was in marketing, she took up med tech anyway since her older sister had taken the same course. After two years of med tech, she thought about shifting to a marketing or business course, but her mother convinced her to finish med tech, from which she graduated in 1990. She also took the board examination and passed. Then she pursued the business course that she wanted and was a working student in 1993 and 1994.
After her success in having her own business, Dy became busy with her other pursuits, like organic farming, helping other businesspeople succeed, and giving back to the community. She is actively involved in the Mandaue Chamber of Commerce and Industry. She is on the 2011 committee handling finance, marketing, publicity, and promotions for the Mandaue fiesta.
Dy also has a water-refilling business acquired in 2010, and she built up the business 50 percent since her acquisition of it. She expressed her intention to have a food business next and perhaps take a culinary course.
