Cebu Normal University, more commonly known as CNU, is considered one of the oldest educational institutions in Cebu.

The Philippine Normal University, which was established in 1901, founded Cebu Normal School (CNS) in 1902. As a summer institute, CNS was supervised by PNS associated with the Cebu High School. PNS ceased supervision in 1915, when CNS became an adjunct institution to the Cebu Provincial High School.

In 1924, CNS became an independent institution. In 1976, it became a chartered college and became known as the Cebu State College (CSC). In 1998, it gained its university status and it changed its name to Cebu Normal University.

During World War 2, the university was used by the Japanese Imperial Army as their headquarters. The rooms were transformed into torture chambers and prison cells.

From the 1980s up to the 1990s, new buildings were added to accommodate the increasing student population.

CNU currently has three campuses: (1) the Main Campus, which is located in Osmeña Boulevard, Cebu City, and two extension colleges, (2) one in Medellin and (3) one in Balamban.

The main campus houses three main colleges, specifically the College of Teacher Education, College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Nursing. It is also home to the CNU museum, the Integrated Laboratory School, the Graduate School, and the Balay Alumni.

CNU takes pride in the distinction of being Region 7′s Center of Teacher Development and Center of Nursing Excellence.  Its undergraduate programs for the College of Teacher Education include Bachelor of Elementary Education and Bachelor of Secondary Education, with varying majors. The College of Nursing offers a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. The College of Arts & Sciences offers Bachelor of Arts in English Language, English Literature, Communication, Filipino, Psychology, and Political Science. It also offers Bachelor of Science in Biology, Chemistry-Physics and Mathematics. Bachelor of Tourism Management is also offered.

The university’s doctorate programs include Education and Public Administration. Their graduate programs include Masters in Nursing, Arts, Public Administration, and MS Library and Information Science. They also have special programs, which include a Caregiver Training Course and Certificate in Professional Education for Teachers.
