Malapascua Island

Cebu is blessed with spectacular beaches that attract tourists from different parts of the world. One of them is Malapascua Island, which never fails to amaze vacationers who seek relaxing retreats. It is a tiny island situated in Daanbantayan, Cebu. It is covered by the insular barangay of Logon (part of the Daanbantayan municipality), with eight hamlets. It is only about 2.5 kilometers long and 1 kilometer wide, located across a shallow strait from the northernmost tip of mainland Cebu Island. Most of the islanders make their livelihood from tourism, fishing, boat-building and farming.

Malapascua means bad Christmas, which was named by a Spanish explorer who first landed on the island one stormy Christmas Day in the 1500s. Looking at this beautiful island destination today, you will realize that it does not fit its gloomy name. Its lush palm trees, white powdery beaches, immaculate waters, and abundant marine life will certainly make your holidays perfect.

Malapascua Island is famed as a diving destination because of its magnificent coral gardens and superb dive spots, one of which is the Monad Shoal, an underwater plateau where thresher sharks, manta rays and devil rays can be regularly seen. Occasionally, one can see other species of shark such as hammerheads and whitetips. The shoal is home to an enormous diversity of species: batfish, flutemouths, barracuda, tuna, mantis shrimp, pipefish, scorpionfish, free-swimming lionfish, Moorish idols, bannerfish, unicornfish, squids, octopi and moray eels.

The island is perfect for those who want a laid-back atmosphere, far from the hustle and bustle of the city. Malapascua is not overcrowded with resorts and bars to preserve its beauty for more generations to enjoy.
