Twelve Cebuano hopefuls are bracing themselves for Sinulog Idol 2012, a competition that will feature the Queen City of the South’s most promising singers. Among the hundreds of Cebuanos who auditioned, only six boys and six girls were allowed to continue after a meticulous selection process. The candidates are aiming to follow the footsteps of reigning Sinulog Idol 2011 Raechelle Mae Faelnar, first runner up Ralph Mallapre and second runner up Esther Aguilar.

The nightly elimination round, which will run for seven consecutive nights, starts on January 6 and culminates on January 12, and will take place at the Fuente Osmeña Circle. Each of the 12 finalists will present a song of their choice on the first night. On the second night, they have to perform a song-and-dance number. On the succeeding nights, they will be doing a Cebuano or Visayan song rendition, rock song, live performance with a keyboardist, and movie or Broadway theme song.

One finalist will be eliminated every night and only six will make it to the finale. On the night of the grand finals, the six lucky contestants have to impress the judges during their performance of a song that is special to them. Three will be eliminated leaving three contestants to compete for the final category entitled the “Time of My Life.” The top three will select a song that has truly inspired them.

The singing competition is judged by Center for Pop-Cebu vocal coach and branch manager Jay Unchuan, Pinoy Dream Academy scholar Apple Abarquez and Cebu journalist Mark Ryan Borinaga. There will also be surprise guest commentators.

In an interview with Sun.Star Cebu, Unchuan shared how the screening took place. According to him, the jurors had to be tough considering the number of people who auditioned. During the previous screenings, the jurors could say “maybe” and the contestants still had the chance to advance to the next round. This year, the jurors were only allowed to give a yes or a no. “Those who joined have to get three yeses, or else they will be eliminated,” Unchuan said.

Unchuan stresses the importance of coaching. According to him, the finalists will not only learn the proper ways to sing or interpret a song, they will also be trained “how to win gracefully, and how to accept defeat.” Aside from becoming a top performer, they are reminded that even if it is a competition, there is no need for rivalry.

The 12 finalists have been undergoing strict trainings at the Center for Pop in Mango Avenue, Cebu City since November 30. The lessons are held twice a week, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on weekdays and 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on weekends. In order for the finalists to concentrate, they are not allowed to use their mobile phones during the coaching sessions. Sinulog Idol project manager Gloria Villarojo, who is very involved in the competition, reminds the finalists that they should be careful in the use of social media such as Facebook and Twitter. Since they are considered as public figures, they have to be cautious about their posts. She also advises the finalists not to keep on changing songs especially a night before a performance. She adds that if the finalist thinks the song will make them shine, they should go for it.

Unchuan is very confident about the 12 finalists they selected for the third edition of Sinulog Idol. He hopes that they will follow the footsteps of the previous contestants who were able to make it to the finals. He told them to perform their best as it is going to be the survival of the fittest this January.

Sinulog Idol started in 2009, which was the 30th year of the Sinulog celebration, as a joint project of the Cebu City government, Sinulog Foundation Inc., Center for Pop Music Philippines, and Soundtraxx Productions Studio.
