Free Concerts in February 2012

Perhaps you’re looking for things to see or do this month of February but you’re on a tight budget. If so, then you would probably appreciate some fun free events that would support or even encourage your nonpaying attendance. Here are two that you could surely consider.

Crossover Live at The Terraces

You can be serenaded by The Dawn in a pre-Valentine free concert on Saturday, February 11, 2012, 7 p.m. at The Terraces, in Ayala Center Cebu. The band brings back its chart-toppers from the ’80s and ’90s, with Cebu radio station Crossover 90.7. Local band Centerfold performs as another featured act, while RCTV’s Cha-Cha Blanco is also featured for the event.

The Dawn rose to fame in the latter part of the ’80s with such hits as “Salamat” and “Enveloped Ideas.” Since around 2009, the band’s lineup consisted of lead vocalist Jett Pangan, drummer JB Leonor, bassist Buddy Zabala (formerly of the Eraserheads), and guitarist Kenneth Ilagan (formerly of True Faith and taking over from departing band member Francis “Brew” Reyes).

The musical group known as Centerfold is a live band that plays three nights a week at the Jazz ‘n Bluz bar and restaurant in Mabolo. Aside from working with RCTV, Cha-Cha Blanco actually performed a song titled “Cebu City Lights” with Dandin Ranillo, who also composed the song and arranged it jointly with Michael Lada. The song was released by Vicor Music in 1991, and reissued as part of a fiesta-themed album in 2009.

Music Unites the World

On Sunday, February 19, 2012, 3 p.m. until 5 p.m., the Cebu Symphony Orchestra (CSO) and the UUU Project Wind Orchestra, which consists of young Japanese musicians, will jointly hold a special concert. It’s for free, and everyone is invited to Ayala Cebu’s Activity Center to attend the event.

The CSO and UUU ensembles also perform jointly at the Medellin Sports Complex on February 18, 2012, 3:00 p.m. The complete list of dates and venues for the UUU Project Wind Orchestra’s performances in conjunction with the “Music Unites the World” series is as follows:

• February 17, 2012, 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart School for Girls
• February 17, 2012, 3:00 p.m. at Plaza Rizal, Cebu City Hall grounds
• February 20, 2012, 4:00 p.m. at Matutinao Elementary School
• February 21, 2012, 3:00 p.m. at Sisters of Mary Girls Town, Talisay

“Music Unites the World” is intended as a fun way to travel the world of music. The performance at Ayala Center Cebu is composed of three stages, namely (1) wind orchestra stage by UUU, (2) string ensemble stage by CSO, and (3) orchestral stage by mixed orchestra members. Music lovers in Cebu can enjoy the live sound of instruments and orchestral harmony.

The orchestra concert organizers’ group allows kids attending the concert to bring an empty plastic bottle. They can use it as a percussion instrument and join in the performance. The series of orchestral concerts is actually presented by Japanese and Filipino music lovers for the benefit of children in Cebu.

The audience-friendly concert program is expected to include the following musical numbers performed by the wind orchestra stage:

• Candide Overture (Leonard Bernstein, USA)
• 風紋ーFumonー (Hiroshi Hoshina, Japan)
• Rhapsody España (Emmanuel Chabrier, France)

You can expect the CSO string ensemble stage to play for you their interpretation of Eine Kleine Nachtmusik (Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Germany). The full orchestra stage is going to play the following musical pieces:

• Visayan Airs (Roberto del Rosario, Philippines)
• Radetzky March (Johann Strauss Sr., Austria)
• Copacabana (Barry Manilow, USA)

Roberto “Obette” del Rosario, who is the CSO’s conductor, arranged the musical number known as Visayan Airs. It incorporates such familiar Visayan tunes as “Matud Nila,” “Pobreng Alindahaw,” “Rosas Pandan,” and “Usahay.”

Those who appreciate the sound of classical music may be interested to know that Hiroshi Hoshino, who composed Fumon (“the wind ripple”), is a contemporary classical composer from Japan. He studied composition at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music and composed the wind orchestra piece that he named Fumon in 1986, for the All Japan Band Competition.
