The Cebu City Zoo was a project by Hon. Raymundo A. Crystal in the late 1950s. With the help of Cebu’s Boy Scout organization and with Governor Espina’s land donation in 1969, the foundations of the zoo were constructed in 1973.

The zoo was then managed by Father Eleuterio Tropa, whom we all remember as the long-haired and bearded old priest who fancied walking with a huge python around his neck. The management was under the sponsorship of the Lamplighters Foundation.

When Father Tropa died in 1993, the management of the zoo was passed on to Cebu City authorities who then entrusted the zoo to the Philippine Wetlands & Wildlife Foundation Inc.

The Cebu City Zoo is currently under the management of Mr. Giovanni Stephen Romarate. Dr. Alice T. Utlang serves as the zoo veterinarian. As of today, the zoo is home to a number of species. Among other residents, it has a 70-year-old parrot, some guinea fowls, pheasants, roosters, owls, sheep and goats, monkeys, a cat from Malaysia, and several reptiles, including an old crocodile that seems to have grown too big for its pen. It also features a golden leopard donated by Former Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña. But its resident superstar is the Bengal tiger named Boggart.

The monitor lizard is a protected species, yet here they keep one in a tiny rusted bare steel cage. This is not how zoos in the 21st century should be.

Finally, my students and I visited the Cebu Zoo today. It was a so, so fun. I saw my learners excite eyes and huge smiles, especially when they met Boggart the tiger, He entertained us with his great moves. With all the banana, carrots and vegetables that the children had provided, we are pretty sure that we made some animals happy. Keep up the good work children and may we learn something today…

I can still clearly remember the fun memories I had in Cebu Zoo. I was around 8 years old then when my father brought us (my sister and I) for the very first time in the place to unwind and course to see and experience the wildlife It was such a great adventure. Father Tropa was still around during that time showing us a huge python which he carried in his neck.

Now that I am a teacher, I also want to share those beautiful and meaningful memories that were stored in my mind. This is a stepping stone for them to love and appreciate other living creatures that surround them.

With what I learned from my childhood, guided me to be a better person.

God bless Cebu Zoo and Continue to flourish Cebu…

    Share and you’ll save life…

Hi to all of you there who shared your thoughts about our dear Cebu Zoo. All I can say as a native of this beautiful city, is please do stop being too negative about your comments!!!

If you have what it takes to help for the zoo, please do so. You can send your spare foods to these poor animals. Just imagine the entrance fee of the zoo, it’s too cheap. This shows that the zoo’s income can’t sustain the total needs of all animals there.

In spite of this, there are still people who sacrifice just reopen the zoo, this is a great benefit for our children. We must remember that the success of a venture will not depend of on one or two person but of an entire city.

Mr. Robert Brand, if you can delete what you had stated earlier and support this humble venture of my city, please do so. I would really appreciate it. Thank you and God bless to this wonderful city of the south… the Queen City… Cebu City

Hello, on an earlier video on U Tube there was an old cockatoo with a horribly rotted bill. It was fed only rice under the old management and many of the other animals were also suffering by neglect.

Has the new management treated the animals for their malnutrition and sicknesses? How is the old cockatoo doing? It is seriously malnourished and need veterinary care.

Please email Thank you Elaine Charkowski
