Thomas S. Monson, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS), led the dedication of its second temple in the Philippines last June 13, 2010. The iconic Mormon temple is a pleasant addition to Cebu City‘s landmarks.

In April 2006, plans to build the temple were announced. In November 2007, groundbreaking and site dedication were carried out. In November 2009, the golden statue of the Angel Moroni was installed on topmost part of the temple. The Angel Moroni was an ancient prophet and played a central role in the Book of Mormon. His statue is a common feature in many LDS temples because he represents the preaching of the word of Christ to the world.

Last May 21 to June 5, 2010, a public open house was held. On June 12, 2010, a cultural celebration was observed prior to the temple’s official dedication on June 13. The dedication was commemorated in three sessions.  The temple finally opened for ordinances last June 14, 2010.

The LDS Temple in Cebu City serves members from 36 districts and 30 stakes all over the Philippines.

The single-spire designed temple, a mission office, a church meetinghouse, and the residences of the Cebu temple president and the mission president occupy the 11-acre LDS property.
