If you’ve been in and out of Cebu a couple of times just to revisit the place, then surely there must be something about it that entices you to come back every now and then. Most tourists in Cebu, especially the first time vacationers, consider Cebu’s beach resorts as their ultimate destination for leisure and pure relaxation.

However, for the not-so-beach bums out there, other leisurely activities await you as well. Aside from a handful of zip-line activities and adventure parks for nature lovers and thrill seekers, there are also a number of golf clubs/courses where enthusiasts can bide their time. Here’s a quick rundown of Cebu’s golf courses:

Alta Vista Golf and Country Club

The Alta Vista Golf and Country Club is one of the top golf courses in Cebu. This private club is an 18-hole course that was designed by Gary Player and the Black Knight Design Company in 1997. It is also open to nonmembers and guests who have made prior arrangements with the club.

This golf club has a challenging mountain course of 6,100 yards, which is known for its rolling terrains, narrow fairways and water hazards. In Alta Vista Golf and Country Club, golfers get a stunning view of the city, including the Mactan and Bohol islands. The club’s facilities include a driving range, a professional gear sports shop, a lounge, restaurant and several bars, tee houses, and male and female changing rooms. Other facilities include a Spanish-influenced clubhouse, a ballroom, a children’s playground, function rooms, covered tennis and basketball courts, bowling alley, gym, swimming pools, jacuzzi, and a sauna.

Cebu Country Club

Another favorite destination of both local and foreign golf enthusiasts is the Cebu Country Club. Located in Banilad, Cebu City, this private golf club is open to non-members and tourists alike. Established in 1928, and dubbed as the premier golf club in Cebu, it is well-known for its 18-hole course, which has twisting fairways, numerous trees, and sand traps with ground coral rock lining.

For the golfer’s convenience, the golf club provides several tee houses along the fairway, a clubhouse, male and female locker rooms, sports gear shop, restaurant and a bar. Other facilities include a swimming pool, a tennis court and a bowling alley.

Cebu Country Club is located at Barangay Banilad, Cebu City. Getting there takes about 30 to 45 minutes of travel time from the Matan-Cebu International Airport. Mactan Island Golf Club

Golfers who want to have a unique golfing experience can head out to the Mactan Island Golf Club, which is located just right across the Mactan-Cebu International Airport.

The club is an 18-hole golf course with sand traps, coral stones and water hazards spread throughout the course that add challenge and thrill to the game. It has an open air restaurant, a clubhouse, tee houses along the fairway, and a swimming pool.

Other facilities in the golf club include a driving range, a pro shop, a bar and restaurant, and a clubhouse. Storage locker rooms are also provided for the safety of the golfer’s personal belongings.

Golf Courses Outside Metro Cebu

If you are having a vacation in the rather remote areas of Cebu, such as Medellin or San Remigio, then you’re just in luck because your craving for a golfing adventure is an earshot away. Here are two (2) golf courses that you can visit:

Verdemar Golf Club  

Located in the northwestern tip of Cebu, San Remigio, Verdemar Golf Club is a golf course in Casa del Mar Hotel that was designed by renowned architect and professional golfer Gary Player.

This 18-hole course has an Arizonian layout that provides a variety of challenges to golfers. Notable is the par 6 hole, which is probably the most challenging due to its huge sand bunkers and high and low terrains.

Golfers can test their skills in the driving range and practice putting greens before the game. There are also tee houses along the fairway for the golfers’ convenience. Male and female locker rooms with shower facilities are also provided.

Mercedes Plantation Golf and Country Club

Another golf club that’s located in the northern part of Cebu is the Mercedes Plantation and Country Club. This resort was designed by well-renowned Filipino golfer Frankie Miñoza, who won numerous golfing events in Asia and Japan.

This golf course is filled with water hazards and sand bunkers, which add challenge and thrill to the game. Golfers can hone their skills in the driving range and practice putting greens before the game. Their club has a pro shop and tee houses along the fairway. Male and female locker rooms and shower facilities are provided, where players can freshen up after a game. Guests or non-members of the golf club must be accompanied by a member to avail of the facilities. Reservations are required and can be made via fax, telephone or email.

Perfect your swing at this hit-all-you-can golf driving range, which is located at the North Reclamation Area.
