What’s the difference between a hotel and a hostel? A hostel is more like a travelers’ inn where guests rent beds in a dorm and share bathrooms, while a hotel tends to be a larger establishment. To illustrate this distinction, Everything Cebu features the Sugbutel hostel and how it compares to the hotels in Cebu.

With its slogan “Creating better ways for the traveler,” Sugbutel Bed & Bath is a hostel that can provide a budget-oriented and sociable stay for smart, practical travelers. It is located less than five hundred meters from SM City Cebu and is just minutes away from the port area as well as the shopping and business districts of Cebu City.

Sugbutel Bed & Bath hostel is one of the projects of the real estate company called Carlos A. Gothong Holdings Inc. (CAGHI). This real estate company launched One Edison Place in 2006. In the latter part of 2008, Sugbutel took over the five-story former WG&A building in the North Reclamation Area.

The name of this travelers’ haven is of course derived from the Bisaya word Sugbu, the historical name of Cebu. Sugbutel prides itself on being the first bed-and-bath facility here. Its accommodations were inspired by the capsule hotels in Japan. Hostel accommodations are popular in other countries, including the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and India.

Backpackers and other tourists from Europe, North America, Asia, and Australia stay at Sugbutel, making it an international hub of worldly travelers. Sugbutel has welcomed guests from the following countries: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Spain, United Kingdom, Canada, United States, China, Japan, Korea, India, Malaysia, Mongolia, Singapore, Australia, and Africa.

The facilities offered at Sugbutel include the following:

  • full air-conditioning
  • CCTV cameras
  • free wireless high-speed Internet connection
  • nonsmoking area
  • piped-in music
  • spacious, elegant toilet and bath
  • 24-hour backup generator
  • 24-hour security
  • ramps (for wheelchairs), railings, special toilets, and other facilities for people with disabilities
  • parking spaces
  • baggage deposit counter
  • housekeeping services
  • entertainment lounge with home theater system
  • atrium
  • canteen
  • ticketing and business center

For your accommodations at Sugbutel, you may choose from first class, premium class, business class, and executive class. First class and premium class have cubicles good for two, three or four persons. Unlike the other types, the executive class features private rooms. First class and business class both feature bunk beds, though the hotel’s pricing for business class does not include the fee for bed linens. Hostel check-in time is 2 p.m.; checkout time is 12 noon the next day. The hostel caters to specific types of clients, namely

  • extended-stay guests and schools
  • NGOs, LGUs, and travel agencies (plus penthouse clients)
  • corporate clients

When you call Sugbutel to make inquiries or reservations, you can specify which of the above categories you fall into so that you can be referred accordingly to the staff member who’s in charge of it. As for mode of payment, your transactions at Sugbutel should be paid in cash, although guaranteed group bookings may be paid for with a manager’s check.

Those who are concerned about the security at the hostel would probably like to know that all beds are equipped with individual lockboxes in which guests can store their valuables while they are sleeping. When they’re going out of the hostel, they may choose to leave their baggage in the bigger lockers that Sugbutel provides. In the locker area, the security is tight, and cameras monitor all activity.

Located at the Sugbutel rooftop is its penthouse, which offers a panoramic view of the city, including the hills and the waters off Cebu and the neighboring islands. The rooftop pavilion is a nice backdrop for outdoor dining as well as a great venue for parties, special events and the like. The penthouse also has an air-conditioned function room that is a good space for corporate events like product launchings, meetings or seminars and for school activities like reviews. The function room can also serve as a venue for private parties whether they are birthdays, debuts, wedding receptions, and so on.

Sugbutel is situated at Don Alfredo D. Gothong Port Centre on S. Osmeña Boulevard corner Road East, North Reclamation Area. It’s near Pier 4. Jeepneys and taxicabs are available to take you to and from the hostel. Stay connected with Sugbutel by visiting its Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/sugbutel or following @sugbutel on Twitter. If you’d rather write an e-mail message, reservations@everythingcebu.com is the address you can send it to.
