Presidential Aspirants, Other Candidates Flock Cebu’s ‘Suroy-Suroy Sugbu’

With the national elections just around the corner, candidates vying for the national posts are picking up the pace with their “campaigns.” However, it would be wrong to say they are campaigning because if they did, technically, they could be disqualified by the Commission on Elections for prematurely doing so. Suffice it to say, they are making themselves visible to the public as much as possible.

Among the presidential candidates spotted during the tourism tour were Gilbert “Gibo” Teodoro and co-presidential aspirant Manny Villar’s running mate, Loren Legarda.

It’s no secret these aspirants hope to get the endorsement of Cebu’s lady governor, Gwen Garcia. In fact, Loren dropped hints during the tour’s stop in the town of Malabuyoc. Loren believes that she and the lady governor share similar views and advocacies, not to mention both of them are women leaders.

Loren is grateful for the chance to visit and tour Cebu like this, and spoke well of the provincial government’s efforts to showcase the different towns of Cebu. She adds that she plans to replicate the tour in Antique where her aunt is Gov. Sally Perez.

Joining Gibo and Loren are senatorial candidates Gilbert Remulla and Gwen Pimentel, who are similarly seeking the lady governor’s blessings and endorsement. Specifically, Ms. Pimentel hopes to have the governor’s endorsement, saying it is very important to her. Gwen Pimentel is the daughter of Sen. Nene Pimentel.

The three-day Suroy Suroy Sugbo tour attended by these candidates passed through the towns of Oslob, Santander, Ginatilan, Malabuyoc, Samboan, Moalboal, Badian and Alegria where they were served with delicacies.

Truly, the Suroy Suroy Sugbu tour is one of the best avenues of showcasing the beauty and culture of Cebu.

Tingle Your Taste Buds at Siomai sa Tisa

Just like ngohiong, siomai is of Chinese origin, but was recently adopted to become one of Cebu’s trademark foods.  Most people crave siomai because they taste good and are very affordable.

There is a perfect place to get these delectable delights where different walks of life and class status converge even at the wee hours of dawn.  Located in Tisa, Labangon, Cebu City, this collection of little stalls line up together in a crowded roadside in an effort to sell “Siomai sa Tisa.”

According to most people, this is where the siomai-mania started in Cebu.  Now, siomai stalls are flourishing all over the city.  It’s funny how most of these stalls would bear signage saying they sell the “original Siomai sa Tisa.”  But when you get to taste them, they are far from the “original.”

Siomai sa Tisa has its own distinct flavor. Here’s a suggestion: take a ride heading for Tisa, Labangon, and let your taste buds tingle in delight. Since this is a very well-known roadside stall in Labangon, most taxi or jeepney drivers know this place. You can just tell the driver to drop you off at the Siomai sa Tisa stalls.

The best thing about this place is that they remain open until the wee hours of dawn.  No wonder this is famous, particularly to people who love the nightlife.

Aside from siomai, these stalls also serve “pusó” or hanging rice.  They also offer noodles and pancit canton, as well as refreshments like halo-halo.

Even with just P50 on your pocket, you can have your fill at Siomai sa Tisa.  This is the best place to eat delicious siomai at very affordable prices.
