The Fuente Osmeña Circle
In the heart of uptown Cebu City is a rotunda park with a picturesque fountain in the center. This is the famous Fuente Osmeña Circle, which is a focal landmark for the Queen City of the South.
Fuente Osmeña, or literally “Osmeña Fountain,” was named after Pres. Sergio Osmeña. The patriarch of one of Cebu’s most prominent political families served as the fourth president of the Philippines. Considering his contributions to society, he is considered a favorite son of the province.
The rotunda, which principally features the Osmeña fountain, is said to have been built during the inauguration of the City’s water system. Over the years, it has evolved from simply an exhibition of Cebuano prowess to serve a variety of more practical purposes. The park surrounding the regal spout has become a venue for an assortment of events.
If you happen to be in the area in the early hours of the day, you’ll see a number of joggers and groups of Tai Chi practitioners. At night, the park transforms into a romantic setting where couples can enjoy the solitary air and the delightful lights as they playfully illuminate the ecstatic jets of water. Cultural presentations, social events and even political gatherings are also held in the park.
The Fuente Osmeña Circle is hard to miss considering its strategic location and accessibility. It is but apt to say that the soul of Cebu City resides in its heart.

I have visited Cebu on 5 occasions in my lifetime since marrying there my present partner in 2000, I have always considered Osmeña Circle the central hub of activity, however I find it frustrating when trying to negotiate the constant stream of traffic encircling the park in my attempts to gain access to the area during the daytime, perhaps the city planners might like to consider the option of pedestrian access subways in order that more Cebuanos and foreign tourists can enjoy the delights of this unique park, what say you ?
