Ronie Pangatunan’s guitar-making business has been in his family for a number of generations. This business is called Guitar Master, and it consists of a guitar gallery and a small factory on Quezon National Highway in Lapu-lapu City, Cebu.

In the 1980s, some Cebu-made guitars were exported to Japan, the United States, and some countries in Europe, but Mr. Pangatunan said that sales of local guitars went down when machine-made guitars from China began to be sold at low prices. He hopes that Cebu-made guitars can regain their former glory.

Depending on the kind of wood and other materials used to make a guitar, the cost of a guitar could be anywhere from a thousand to thirty thousand pesos. Guitar makers in Cebu use woods like narra, langka (jackfruit), and kamagong (ebony). If you want a personalized guitar designed for you, you can purchase such a made-to-order instrument from Guitar Master.

Got a Tenor ukulele from Ronnie Last Nov. 1, 2012. It cost me a hefty Ps3,500. He said that the top is made of solid Silk Oak and the body that of Phl. Acacia. Don’t know much about woodtones so am not sure if what I got is a ‘real mc’coy.’ Judging by its looks and make, I would say that it is an ordinary langka wood. But what made me go for it is the quality of its sound. Wow! From the moment I tried it, my hand was practically glued on the uke. The sound it produced can easily put to shame the imported ones I have tried in Metro Manila stores. It is simply greeat!! – So if you happen to pass by Cebu City, do drop by in this little unassuming guitar store aptly named Guitar Masters in Opon Lapu Lapu City and get yourself a uke..

Just visited Cebu early in Jan. 2012 with my wife who is from there. I wanted to visited a local luthier to look at some classical guitars. A friend took us to Guitar Master where I met Ronie Pangatunan. It was a great visit meeting Ronie and some of his staff. Needless to say I came home to Pennsylvania, U.S.A. with a beautiful classical guitar made by this third generation luthier! He is very talented and experienced in his art…,and a great guy! I would highly recommend a visit to his shop to anyone seeking a quality guitar while visiting the Philippines.
