The name Medellin comes from a Spanish city with the same name located in the province of Bajadoz, which is in Spain’s Extremadura Region. It became a municipality in September 9, 1881 by virtue of a royal decree that was promulgated by Queen Isabel of Spain. Before it was declared as a municipality, Medellin was part of Daanbantayan, a first-class municipality found in the northernmost tip of Cebu.

The town’s main agricultural products are sugarcane, coconuts, fruits, and corn. Just like any other Cebu province, Medellin has an annual town fiesta celebrated every April 26 and 27.
