Sun Life Financial celebrated its 120th year in the Philippines with series of events for Cebuanos. One of the celebration’s highlights is the business opportunity forum last March 7 that featured Sun Life Financial’s brand ambassador, international industrial designer Kenneth Cobonpue.
FROM LAHUG TO HOLLYWOOD
From Lahug Cebu to Hollywood – that’s how far Kenneth Cobonpue has reached with his signature designs made of natural fibers and materials.
Born in Lahug, Mr. Cobonpue got to learn the processes of wood manufacturing because of his mother’s job as furniture maker. He shared that he went to UP to study business, but applied to UP Arts program after realizing numbers were not for him. Unfortunately, he was rejected because he couldn’t draw well enough. (Just recently, he was requested to be the opening guest speaker for the UP Arts graduation ceremony). He does pieces inspired by nature because he loves the transparency that nature delivers.
The internationally-acclaimed designer chose to Self Brand his furniture, meaning international retailers would need to keep his brand label and made in the Philippines on the labels. Consequently, he lost almost all his clients for a year or two. So, he resort to retail and selling furniture directly.
Now, he has become an internationally famed designer winning numerous international awards including 5 Japan Good Design Awards, the grand prize at the Singapore International Design Competition, the Design for Asia Award of Hong Kong, the American Society of Interior Design Top Pick selection and the French Coup de Coeur award the Asian Industry Award.
ONE WITH SUN LIFE’S ADVOCACIES
Mr. Cobonpue was announced brand ambassador of Sun Life in Cebu last 2014 at Marco Polo Plaza.
During the announcement of Mr. Cobonpue as Sun Life’s new ambassador in 2014, he said in an interview with inquirer, “Sun Life has been in the Philippines for a long time and is known for its quality products and services. The way Sun Life nurtures its business is very much aligned with how I take care of my own brand – by valuing quality, integrity, and legacy,” he said. “My pieces carry all these values. I don’t design just for the present. I look at them as treasures that can be passed on from one generation to the next – just like Sun Life’s products.”
He talked about the Sun Life being the number one Insurance/Finance company for the past 4 years. Beating its biggest competitor PhilamLife who held the crown for 60+ years. Kenneth has made a big difference in the Sun Life brand awareness campaign as they aim to become the household name in Insurance in the Philippines. Sun Life’s mission is “To be an international leader in protection & wealth management”
