The sport of badminton has plenty of enthusiasts in the Cebu scene. Maybe you already know that the word badminton etymologically came from the name of the residence of the Duke of Beaufort, in England.
G Events in cooperation with Amazing Cebu organized Cebu’s first Mega Badminton Open, Smash 01. It takes place on February 25, 2012, at the Metro Sports Center on Salinas Drive, Lahug, Cebu City. For cash, medals and gift items, players would compete in the following levels in the Mega Badminton Open:
A – MWMXD (men’s doubles, women’s doubles, mixed doubles)
C – MWMXD
D – MWMXD
E – MWMXD
F – MWMXD
D* – MDblsMXD (men’s doubles, mixed doubles)
E* – MDblsMXD
*veterans’ category, for ages 40 and above
More details about the tournament prizes are probably going to be posted on G Events’ FB page www.facebook.com/pages/G-Events/232092186869962 by the first week of February 2012. Registration fee for the event is Php800, with a singlet included. The leveling dates are this February 10, 11 and 12, 2012, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the aforementioned venue.
Metro Sports Center, the event’s venue, gained a reputation for having the strongest badminton membership since it opened its doors in 2002. A number of its members hold regional or national titles. Other nationwide and local tournaments held at Metro Sports include those of well-known brands such as JVC, Kimoni, Rudy Project, SOTX, and Thirsty, not to mention the corporate tournaments of Aboitiz, Globe, HSBC, PLDT, and Smart.
One good reason for Metro Sports’ competitive advantage when it comes to badminton is that it has eighteen world-class badminton courts with Taraflex surfaces. Such surfaces basically consist of rubber mats on wooden planks, which serve as ideal playing surfaces since they absorb some of the shock and prevent the players from skidding on the court surface, thus limiting the risk of injuries to players. Taraflex surfaces are used in top-notch badminton courts abroad.
Offering event planning and event services, the events-organizing body known as G Events is affiliated with Amazing Cebu (channel 54 on Sky Cable Cebu), which is a local channel here in our beloved province. Amazing Cebu’s tagline is “where business and pleasure meet.” You can watch the program called G Channel on Amazing Cebu; G Events noted on its Facebook page that some other details about the Smash 01 badminton tournament may be aired on that program.
Amazing Cebu is also home to Amazing Sports, a show whose conceptualization focuses on the promotion of sports tourism in Cebu. Amazing Sports put up an exhibit at Ayala Center Cebu’s Active Zone, and the show had its press launch at Kartzone in Barangay Kasambagan on November 8, 2011, featuring top-performing Cebu football player Gino Galicia and dance-sport athlete Ann Montecillo, the show’s co-hosts, along with the show’s staff and crew. Amazing Sports was under Sky Cable’s loop programming and was scheduled to air every other Saturday starting November 18, 2011, with two episodes per month and two sports featured on each episode of its first season.
Amazing Sports’ 45-minute pilot episode was about the community of long-boarders in Minglanilla and wakeboarders in Liloan, plus 15 minutes of airtime for sponsors like Danasan Eco Adventure Park, JCI, Kartzone, and Alaxan FR, among others. Ann Montecillo expressed her hope that Amazing Sports will be a way for the people of Cebu to discover nontraditional sporting events too, while executive producer John Gabatos said in the audiovisual presentation that was prepared for the show’s press launch that the show is an invitation to Cebuanos to experience what our island offers in terms of sports. The show’s hosts were able to try for themselves such sporty activities as wakeboarding, wall climbing, rapelling, and caving.
Amazing Sports would cater to grassroots programs for different sports here in Cebu.
