Cebu celebrates the 17th Press Freedom Week this September 17 to September 24, 2011.
Media practitioners kicked off the celebration with a parade at the historic Osmeña Boulevard. The annual Freedom Walk will follow the City Hall to the Provincial Capitol route, which was participated in by a significant number of workers from the media industry. Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma celebrated the Eucharist at 9 a.m., at the Capitol Social Hall, prior to the formal opening.
Also on September 17, KBP-Cebu’s Phoebe Kaye Fernandez was crowned Ms. Press Freedom 2011 at the Formo Restaurant and Lounge in Banilad Town Centre.
The 2011 Cebu Press Freedom Week has lined up activities that are designed not just to entertain but also to affirm the industry’s commitment to professional journalism.
An election for new officers for the Cebu Federation of Beat Journalists (CFBJ) was held on September 18.
On September 19, a forum on new online trends in media will be conducted by Cebu Daily News and Cebu Holdings Inc. The main speaker for the forum will be the director of Inquirer Mobile, Mr. Javier Vicente Rufino. The forum will be held at the Marcelo B. Fernan Cebu Press Center, which is the main venue of several forums organized by KBP-Cebu, Sun.Star and The Freeman.
A Freedom Run (3k and 5k) is set for Saturday, September 24. A fellowship party started the week and a fellowship dinner, which will be held at Cafe Laguna, will cap the Press Freedom Week.
