Not long after the successful celebration of the 30th Sinulog festival, Cebu City will be celebrating its 73rd Charter day on Feb. 24, 2010.
Cebu City earning the status of an independent and chartered city in 1937, the city became an administrative entity governed by its own charter, as well as the Local Government Code of 1991. By virtue of its chartered city status, registered voters of Cebu City are not allowed to vote candidates for provincial offices.
The city of Cebu is mainly governed by the officials at the city hall. A mayor heads the governing body, followed by a vice-mayor and 16 councilors. The councilors are divided into two groups, one representing the northern districts and another representing the southern part of the city.
In line with the upcoming 73rd commemoration of the city’s Charter Day, the incumbent mayor of Cebu City, Tommy Osmeña directly expressed the desire to hold a grander Charter Day on Feb. 24. The Mayor expects to have bigger and better events lined up to commemorate the city’s independent status.
The planned events for Feb. 24 include a flag-raising ceremony, a solemn mass, a floral offering, and an unveiling of a statue. The statue is a tribute to Vicente Rama – the “Father of the City of Cebu.” His legacy is the Cebu City Charter created in 1937.
President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo has also been invited by Mayor Osmeña to grace the event. The President will be awarded the status of being an adopted daughter of Cebu City. According to the Mayor, the declaration is an expression of the city’s gratitude for President Arroyo’s decision to conduct her oathtaking ceremony in the city last 2004. The establishment of Malacañang sa Sugbo, which is the President’s first official residence outside of Luzon, and the 2007 convention of the leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations held in Cebu are further reasons for such award.
Persons, groups and institutions who made significant contributions to the city will be given recognition.
Indeed, this will be a Charter Day celebration to watch out for as the Mayor will also deliver his last State of the City Address at the Cebu City Sports Center on Feb. 24, 2010.
