From over 200 original Bisaya song entries, it has come down to 6 vying to become the next Vispop champion! Here are the list of finalists who will be competing at the Grand Finals at SM City Cebu Cinema 1 at 7PM on June 26, 2015:
Now in it’s 3rd year, VisPop, is a songwriting campaign that urges to introduce a more professional and competitive playlist of Visayan songs and to encourage more songwriters to use our native tongue in their artform. More than that, it celebrates our beautiful Bisaya dialect open to participants not just from Cebu, but to anyone who can speak or write in the dialect.
“The challenge now is how to alleviate the current state of Cebuano songs in such a way that it can fairly represent the ever-colorful Cebuano psyche,” banners the VisPop voice of pride – “Dili tanang Bisdak bastos. Dili sad tanang Bisdak kinaraan. Labaw sa tanan, ang Bisdak dili gyud barat ug bakya. Hinono-a, ang Bisdak pilian ug pihikan sa iyang gusto.” (Not all Visayan [music] are obscene. Not all Visayan [music] are old-fashioned. Most of all, Visayan is not cheap and out-of-style. Actually, the Visayans are picky and particular about their choices.)
It is for this reason VisPop approaches the situation with a sense of passionate urgency, providing educational opportunities in the form of songwriting workshops wherein possible entrants, especially the youth, can hone and further professionalize their songwriting skills.
This is VisPop’s call to action: We are looking for good Visayan songs that can break into current radio airplay, songs that have both a hook and a heart, songs that are radio-friendly, and yet are also substantial in their theme and approach. Basically, just good music we can all be proud of.
